FNP-45
« on: April 13, 2011, 04:32:42 PM »
I'll try to keep this short.  I am in the market for a new pistol.  I have been mostly a 1911 or revolver shooter.  I am 95+% sure I have settled on the FNP-45.  I just can't decide which one I want.

Considerations:
- This will primarily be a bedroom pistol due to it's size.
- I am tempted to get a red dot on it several years down the road.
- I can get a decocker only model online for just under $500 because they are discontinuing this model.
- The USG model with safety and decocker would be another $50 bucks.
- The tactical is at least $300-400 more.

Having said that, I am trying to decide if I need the safety of the USG model.  If it's a bedroom gun, I won't be carrying it C&L.

Thought questions:
- If I want to add a red dot and taller sights later, am I better off getting the tactical?
- Do any of you 1911 shooters have an opinion on the USG safety?

Thanks in advance,
Herk

I have a FNP45 tactical in FDE and a regular USG model in black. I also have 2 USG 9's. The FNP in the USG configuration is one of my favorite pistols. I love 1911's and have carried Glocks for 20+ years so it's like the 2 got together and had a baby, best of both worlds. I keep one of the 9's setup with the slim grips and it's my son's favorite pistol  to shoot and one of my wife's favorites. I personally hate the decock only model, the trigger is pretty rough on the 2 or 3 I've shot. I've got a Trijicon RMR on my tactical and mine came from the factory with the raised sights.

If you really think you want to add a red dot at some point pay for the tactical, I've seen some recently on gunbroker for around $850. The slide modifications would cost you around $250 and the 2 extra mags (my tactical came with 5 where the standard came with 3) and case are worth another $100+ so your getting your money's worth for the difference. If you don't think you want to add a red dot or a can, or both the regular USG is a great deal. I've got mine as my nightstand gun with a Itac Laser/Tac Light combo on it. I've never carried that particular pistol but still appreciate the cocked and locked ability since I train with that configuration or a striker fired pistol only. If you think the decock version would suit your needs that would be your call but for a little extra I'd rather have both safety andg decock. Either way FNH makes a great product. I own or have owned Glocks, XDm's, HK USP's and many other 45's and feel like the FNP 45 is as good or better than any of them. I think it's the most under-rated gun on the market. I know Michael Bane is a big fan of them as well. There have been a couple other FNP threads on here in the past if you search the archives.

I can't speak specifically to the FNP-45 USG but I do have a FNX-40 and FNP-9  (non-USG).  I never really liked the left side de-cocker on the FNP-9 as I would occasionally de-cock the gun while firing, so I cut it off.  The safety on the FNX-40 looks like the USG version and I do like it.  I ride the safety on my 1911s so that habit carries over to the FNX.  To date I have never accidentally de-cocked it as I would do with the FNP.  I'm a real fan of the FN handgun family.

Thanks, guys.  One of my main concerns (as a 1911 safety-rider) is that I would accidentally decock the stupid thing unintentionally.  I did check out some of the older threads, but thought I was covering new ground here.  My apologies if that isn't the case.

No problem, definitely new ground, just thought you might find some of the older threads helpful if you hadn't seen them. I ride the safety pretty hard on my 1911's as well but have never accidently decocked my FNP. It takes a decent amount of pressure.
