In the District of Columbia, notable for their distaste for firearms of any kind, there is a law that requires automatic sentencing for using a firearm in the commission of a crime. I believe the sentence is 5 years tacked on to whatever else you are convicted of. It is a law that almost never used. They hate to put the poor dears in prison.

Last year a policeman was killed when he was struck and killed by a young felon fleeing the scene of a crime. This same young felon was, six months earlier, given a pass on an illegal gun charge. Had he been in prison where he belonged, that LEO would still be alive.   

I always wonder if the type of lenient sentencing in your example is really just a disastrous, misguided sympathy for the criminals or if it is part of a sinister plan of having the general populace placed in fear of crime and criminals.

One thing I have done is contact my 2 senators and my congressman and ask them for their support into drafting legislation to put an end to "Gun Free Zones".  They do not work and are really "killing zones" that I don't want to be caught in.  A criminal carries his gun illegally no matter where he/she is.  They don't respect signs or laws that say NO GUNS, because they are predators and their gun is their tool for "work".

That's one thing we as the gun culture can get behind.  It's a sensible gun law that the President says he supports.  Lets outlaw Gun Free Zones!
