Put My Son On A Plane Today. Summer's Over.
« on: July 28, 2011, 09:55:15 PM »
As with previous summer's, I spent the last 5 weeks with my 16 year old son Thomas. Drove him to the airport at 7:25 a.m. and watched him pass through the TSA security on the way to the gate. Got a salute, smile and a wave.  As I posted previously, this year I am officially "short". He is now 6'2" tall, and an eating machine. :o   As last year, the holidays come and go even faster it seems,... and our "kids" continue to "grow up". :'(

All my new goods in the strong box were fired, stripped, cleaned, fired again, cleaned again, and my new M1 Garand, was a true day of reckoning for him, as it will be in the family for generations to come, just like his Great-Grandfather's Mauser, Winchester, 1911 and other "stuff".

My AR build back in Jan/Feb, met with his approval, the old tried and true Moisin 91/30 received nothing but smiles. He didn't care for my M&P .40 Compact,.... ::) Personal preference I suppose. ::) But loves my Glock21... :-X

The pool time, chess time, Military Channel time, History Channel, watching True Grit ( the original),  fishing, beach, range, BBQ, even just cleaning up after some homemade Baby Back Ribs, etc,.. just has flown by.

Just wanted to post how fast life is going. Watching my son field strip a 1953 M1 Springfield Garand, and reassembling it and performing a function check, than moving to my "Frankenstein AR" and doing the same, made me smile. For some reason, my Glock 21, S&W 1911, and Walther PPK/S are his favorites,.. ::) However, the Ruger Blackhawk, and Uberti .45 Colt run a close second..... ;)

Listening to him rant about Obama, Congress, politics, the U.N., Islam, zombies, and what is "my future"? rang true. I answered the best way I knew how, with common sense and history.

I am confident that he will never be one of the sheeple,...and as I get old(er), and he grows up, the next generation can at least count on one "kid" who gets it.

Thanks for the chance to vent a father missing his son, in a troubled time,....Thought of an old tune by Cat Stevens, (skip the politics),...that was a good one.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

Hang tough TW. Sounds like you raised him well (at least he likes Glocks and ARs ;)). You are racking up quality "dad" time with the kid and he won't forget that. Divorces suck ( I'm the child of one), but you are doing your best. Steady on TW, and drink a couple of cold ones tonight. :-\

Good looking young man!  You have helped him and given him a good head start on the future.....whatever that may be.

God Bless,

Richard

Fantastic post, TW. and a fantastic job in keeping that kid focused on what's real and what's important. Great job!

Great post.   What's sad is even though I had my sons at home all the time, I probably didn't do as many things with them as you're doing with yours.   We were too busy doing school/sports/band things to really spend the quality time I should have with them individually.

You're not thinking this is possible but in some ways I envy you your 5 weeks.

Great way to spend summer, TW....... I guarantee it makes life-long good memories.

I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

My parents were divorced too - and it REALLY SUCKED getting on that plane.
One thing I can guarantee you, your son will remember these times for the rest of his life.
Good job TW!
You can say lots of bad things about pedophiles; but at least they drive slowly past schools.
