See Pics From the New ‘Chicks with Guns’ Book Celebrating Firearms and Femininity

  * Posted on September 30, 2011 at 12:04pm by Buck Sexton Buck Sexton

A new book by photographer Lindsay McCrum titled “Chicks with Guns” explores and celebrates women’s gun ownership across the United States. And we got the pictures to prove it.

Around 20 million women own guns in the United States. Despite that substantial group, women are not regularly depicted in popular culture as defenders and practitioners of firearms tradition. McCrum decided to change that.

The photos include women from ranches to police departments. Some are hunters, some are competition shooters. A number of them have heirloom guns that have been passed down for generations and have become a cherished part of family lore. And they all believe deeply in their right to defend themselves and their families.

Over her three years capturing photos of women and firearms, McCrum came to recognize that many women are just as passionate about firearms as their male counterparts. “Their numbers are really high,” McCrum told MSNBC in an interview,  ”but their profile is actually really low.” While understated, the profound role of women in gun culture across the U.S. exceeded the author’s expectations.

\

McCrum said she was “so surprised by the variety and breadth and diversity of these women. There are so many stereotypes about guns… but the reality is so much more complex and varied than you can imagine.”

The author has tried to capture that complexity in 80 portrait photos and individual stories on the role of guns for the women and their families. McCrum learned that women own guns for many reasons, but underlying those personal decisions lies unifying themes of individualism, self-reliance, and the family.

And in a revelation that will surprise no Americans from the heartland, the author said with some surprise that “when you get outside of the blue-state cities, everybody has a gun.”

""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington.
