I found that the correct response is "I don't doubt your math (even if you do, but if you start arguing numbers you're already playing their game). Instead ask: But what does it mean? Is this indicative of a lack of freedom in other countries? Why are the countries with the most guns, the US, India and China politically stable? What is the significance of all this"? And then let them mumble.

This table provides data for all of the countries listed in the report.  It turns out that Switzerland is #3 when ranked by ownership rate.  This table provides a different view of the data than does Figure 2.  The table shows civilian ownership per 100 residents with no consideration given to country population.  Figure 2, however, shows the total of all firearms owned by civilians in each country.  So a very densely populated nation, even if it has a relatively low ownership rate, may have a larger overall total of weapons.

how exactly do you do a survey of gang members and drug cartel members?

walk around in Compton with a clipboard and a pen going door to door?

This is where I break my first rule and question the math. Lets take Mexico. Its damned near impossible to legally own anything larger than a .22. So, how did they get their numbers? A phone survey? Same deal in Pakistan. You can't legally own a gun. The government just has a fluid agreement (aka self preservation) not to enforce it in the tribal areas. How do they know how many guns are owned? While I'm sure that in Yemen the government has just given up on gun registration, and good for them, I doubt they can track the number. Here in the US, and the European and other civilized ( :'() countries you can get data from manufacturers based on the numbers of guns sold. In these other places I'm betting it comes down to a WAG, but still, if we carry the two its math, see? ::)
