Obama prepping thousands of lawyers for election

OLYMPIA, Wash. — President BarackObama’s campaign has recruited a legion of lawyers to be on standby for this year’s election as legal disputes surrounding the voting process escalate.

Thousands of attorneys and support staffers have agreed to aid in the effort, providing a mass of legal support that appears to be unrivaled by Republicans or precedent. Obama’s campaign says it is particularly concerned about the implementation of new voter ID laws across the country, the possibility of anti-fraud activists challenging legitimate voters and the handling of voter registrations in the most competitive states.

Republicans are building their own legal teams for the election. They say they’re focused on preventing fraud — making sure people don’t vote unless they’re eligible — rather than turning away qualified voters.

Since the disputed 2000 presidential election, both parties have increasingly concentrated on building legal teams — including high-priced lawyers who are well-known in political circles — for the Election Day run-up. The Bush-Gore election demonstrated to both sides the importance of every vote and the fact that the rules for voting and counting might actually determine the outcome. The Florida count in 2000 was decided by just 537 votes and ultimately landed in the Supreme Court.

This year in that state alone, Obama and his Democratic allies are poised to have thousands of lawyers ready for the election and hope to have more than the 5,800 attorneys available four years ago. That figure was nearly twice the 3,200 lawyers the Democrats had at their disposal in 2004.

Romney has been organizing his own legal help for the election. Campaign attorney Ben Ginsberg did not provide numbers but said the campaign has been gratified by the “overwhelming number of attorneys who have volunteered to assist.”

“We will have enough lawyers to handle all situations that arise,” he said.

The GOP doesn’t necessarily need to have a numerical counterweight to Obama’s attorneys; the 2000 election showed that experienced, connected lawyers on either side can be effective in court.

Former White House counsel Robert Bauer, who is organizing the Obama campaign’s legal deployment, said there is great concern this year because he believes GOP leaders around the county have pursued new laws to impede the right to vote.

“The Republican Party and their allies have mapped out their vote suppression campaign as a response to our success in 2008 with grass-roots organization and successful turnout,” Bauer said. “This is their response to defeat: changing the rules of participation so that fewer participate.”

Several states with Republican leaders have recently pursued changes that could make voting more difficult, including key states such as Florida and Ohio, despite objections from voting rights groups that believe that the laws could suppress votes from low-income and minority blocs.

Republicans dispute that the laws are political, pointing to cases of election fraud and arguing that measures like those requiring voters to show identification are simply common sense.

The move came out 40+ years ago, and they were referring to Republicans, but hey, if the foo shits . . . . . .

Well, one thing you could (if you were so inclined ) give BO credit for.
Between the paid heckler's at Romney appearances and now lawyers to fight the will of the voters he actually has created non Govt. jobs.

I have observed a couple of things that might indicate the Dems are facing a tough election season.

First is that I am on the a mailing list from them.  Generally I get 2 or 3 emails a day about how they are pushing to meet some kind of midway or other campaign financing deadline and just know with our support they will meet this important goal.  Well, for the last few days I have been receiving 10 or 12 of these emails. 

Second, is that I read that the location of the Dem convention has been moved.  The reason given was logistics, but "insiders" say it is because of a $27 million(or something) shortfall in funds. 

I'd say they are running dry.   Looks like their plans not only will run out of other peoples money but they have run out of their own money too.

The Obama campaign is in dept up to it's ears.
A recent campaign stop in Durham NH would have been canceled if an anonymous donor had not coughed up $20,000 for the security costs. The town was not going to pay, and the campaign couldn't pay.

I blogged about this story yesterday - a New Hampshire town was stuck with $20,000 in police overtime expenses because the Obama campaign had scheduled an appearance.

It now appears that an anonymous donor has stepped forward and will pay the police overtime:

    An anonymous donor has offered the town of Durham, N.H., $20,000 to help cover the local security expenses of President Obama's visit there today.

    Local governments are responsible for certain police and fire expenses when a president comes to visit; Obama's trip has become a source of local criticism because he is holding a campaign event in Durham, not an official presidential one.

With their convention just over two months away, the Democratic National Committee’s party planners are about $27 million smackers short of their fundraising goal — which means that they’re finding it suddenly necessary to cut down on some of the initially planned bells and whistles of their party’s main event.

    Democrats canceled a political convention kick-off event at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and will move the activities to Charlotte’s main business district, the convention’s host committee announced. …

    The move comes as party planners are grappling with a fundraising deficit of roughly $27 million, according to two people familiar with the matter who requested anonymity to discuss internal party politics. With a party ban on direct contributions from corporations, the host committee has raised less than $10 million, well short of its $36.6 million goal, said one of the people. …

    In January, Steve Kerrigan, chief executive officer of the convention committee, said that Democrats were shortening their convention from four days to three “to make room for a day to organize and celebrate the Carolinas, Virginia and the South and kick off the convention at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Labor Day,” Sept. 3.

It wouldn’t be funny, except that they dreamed so big — President Obama, for example, felt that he wouldn’t be able to confine his self-glorification to anything less than a gigantic football stadium — and they’re finding themselves forced to realize that even celebrations of President Obama’s magnanimity are built on budgets, not enthusiastic projections of grandeur. Kind of strangely similar to how they run the government, huh?
