It's been awhile since I heard the numbers so they have probably gone up. Processing the blood (collection, testing, storage and separating the blood into the different components was around $200. I think the hospital I work at charged around $600 per unit of blood given. That cost takes into account the product, equipment, space you are occupying and most importantly my highly trained and skilled ass to give it to you.   ;D

I've never heard of blood being free whether you donate or not. I used to donate but not anymore. I've seen too much waste and inappropriate use of blood and blood products to be bothered with it, coupled with a bad experience the last time I donated.

I donate double red cells (through an apheresis machine) each time.......
It is a win-win because I only have to give half as often, and because it has already been separated and is ready to be used in a transfusion without having to be processed.
"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison
