New York State Coyote Hunting Season Change
« on: March 14, 2007, 11:23:12 AM »
The coyote hunting season in New York State is a short one compared to other states.  New York has been plagued with an abundance of coyote population so much so that the coyote has been the subject of many recent radio and TV news casts where coyotes have attacked humans and their pets.

The residents, hunters & trappers of New York have a petition aimed at the NY Department of Environmental Conservation to take a look at the present New York coyote hunting season and either extend it or make it year round.  We'd appreciate your help!  Thank you!

Out on this side of the Pecos, the coyote has no closed season.  It is considered a non game species, a pest, and can be hunted year round.  In my home state of Kansas, there is no closed season.  Interestingly, populations hold steady, the only legal exception to shooting an animal on private land that doesnt belong to you, or shooting from a vehicle on  a public road or across a public road is to shoot a coyote.

Although the thread is now a year old(er), we still need signatures from New York State if we're ever to see a change in the hunting laws of coyotes.  My biggest problem with this is I hear so many complaints all the time from folks, they attacked my dog right on the back porch, they attacked my farm animals, they walk around in groups on my land close to the house, I'm worried they'll do this or that.  Yup, you guessed it.  First to complain, but last to do anything about it.

All we need is a substantial number of signatures to help change the coyote hunting season in New York.  And yes, I agree they have increased in numbers ten fold.  I can go within one mile of my home and still be in 'Town Limits' and see coyote in the fields or crossing the roads.  (And I am not speaking of farm or country land.)  We have a lot of the coyotes and 9 times out of 10 we can't take one because of season or limits of town/city rules.  So the best thing to do is to extend the season. But we need signatures on the petition.

Many thanks to all of you who have signed the petition.

While it may help to change the season, what you really need is a lawyer who understands nuisance animal  and working agricultural operations law.

Somebody in the Wildlife Commission needs a serious education.

Almost all states have separate categories of law that overlap the same topic.

So if you are John Doe, City Dweller, out plinking in the woods at coyotes you might be in violation of some regulation or other.  But, if you are John Brown, Farmer, defending your crops or livestock you are well within your legal rights to eliminate as many coyotes harming your income as necessary.

The trouble starts when people read one part of the state code and do not bother to read the other parts.

Look it up. I will bet it is there and no one (Especially Rick Ranger) knows anything about it.
