A while back I promised some folks in the chat a range report on my Kimber Custom II. Behold! The range report:
It was my first trip to the NRA HQ Range in Fairfax, VA. The place did not disappoint. Granted, the place was packed at 10:00 am on a Saturday, but that was to be expected. The lounge and range area were both clean and well lit. The staff was knowledgeable and courteous. The range ammo and targets were comparatively inexpensive, too. I forget how much the ammo was, but it was less that Wal-Mart, and the big targets were 50 cents a piece. The only downside was there was no photography allowed. The gun shot well, and there were no malfunctions. My groups are continuing to shrink, and are moving closer to the bull's eye. At 10 yds I'm consistently at the 7 o'clock in the 10 ring, just edging into the 9.
While there, I had the chance to shoot a commander length Kimber with a set of Crimson Trace grips. I would be interested to hear any theories on how this happened, but at 25 yds, I could hit center mass with the laser on. Regardless of the laser, the gun was much easier to shoot than I thought a short .45 would be.
I also had the chance to shoot a .22LR conversion kit on said 1911. What a hoot. The first time I pulled the trigger, I wasn't sure if it had gone off until I saw the little bitty hole in the target.
Overall, it was a great day of shooting, and I got the chance to meet some very nice people. Again, I apologize for the lack of pictures. No photographizing is allowered at the NRA Range.
