A paralyzed vet's journey

This was in the opinion section as a letter to the editor of my local paper.
Some of you may have already heard of this vet.

A paralyzed vet's journey

I am a paralyzed veteran writing to you today to let you know of the journey I am about to undertake starting Oct. 21. I was front-page news in the Florida Times Union newspaper on Monday, Aug. 11. The headline was “Cinderella Man.”

You see, in July 2005, I was coming home from seeing the movie “Cinderella Man” when I was struck by a 17-year-old drunk driver. It changed my life in an instant. I was paralyzed from the waist down, but God blessed me to still be alive now. I’m now fighting another battle of my own.

Starting Oct. 21, I will wheel my specially adapted hand cycle from Jacksonville, Fla., to Chicago, Ill., — 1,060 miles ending at Harpo studios to meet Oprah Winfrey. The journey is to bring awareness to underage drinking and driving and to lobby for stiffer laws for minors who drink and get behind the wheel of a car. It’s my passion now. Something really needs to be done before more lives are lost and serious injuries occur.

If you have the time, please visit my Web site at www.dons2ndchance.com to read and learn more about my story. I would appreciate any consideration you could give to supporting me on my journey whether it be with hotel rooms, gas cards, food or media coverage. If you’re interested in my cause and in making a donation, please visit my Web site and go to the tab called “Fundraising” to make a general, tax-deductible contribution to help with my medical expenses, or to the “Just Go for It, Tour” tab for specific contributions related to my upcoming trip. On the “Just Go for It‚ Tour” page, you’ll also find links to local media coverage and a video that was prepared by the Florida Times-Union. Also, you will see a map of my route which will take me through your fine city and state.

Your friend,

Don Worley

"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison
