Drunk dad cleaning guns, Daughter Killed
« on: November 18, 2008, 09:37:39 AM »
Hey everyone. I miss being on here as much as I used to. Work is really busy with all the leaves falling so I have no time for anything.

I came across this story this morning in the newspaper, and I know it is morbid and it is going to give the anti gunners more ammo for their assault, but it is one that we need to be aware of. And learn from someone else's mistake.

With guns being brought under fire the more accidents we can prevent will help us in the long run. We will never see the story of someone saving another's life by using a firearm on the front page, but stories like this will be on it any chance we let it. I know we, on here, are not like this guy and I am not saying that any of you are, but hopefully this will maybe make one person think before they act on something not so safe.

This was on the front page of the Seattle PI:

This is not a gun problem, this is an alcohol problem! This is no different than drunk driving and killing someone, or drunk anything and killing someone. There is absolutely NO excuse for this.

Unfortunately, its these stories that cast a blanket on "gun" ownership in a negative light. You never hear about the fourth generation youth hunter who recently got a record buck, or won a shooting tournament.

Just the instance where one had a major lapse of gun safety.

Its a tragedy.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.

+1! How  many kids are killed every year by drunk relatives driving cars? Horrible situation, but not a gun problem.

This is a horrible loss.  Let's help people keep focused on the real problem.

CDC Report we should all educate ourselves with:
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr56/nvsr56_10.pdf

CDC 2005 All ages, sex & race death with firearm:
Suicide 17,002
Unintentional 789
Homicide 12,352
Undetermined 221
Legal Intervention/War 330

CDC All ages, sex & race other causes:
Falls 20,426
Cut/Pierce 2,795
Drowning 4,248
Fire hot substance 3,736
Fire flame 3,626
Machinery 755
All Transport 47,894
Motor Vehicle traffic 43,667
Natural Environmental 2,462
Poisoning 32,691
Suffocation 13,920
All Injury 173,753
All Suicide 32,637
So, with 12,352 homicides with gun divided by what...300 million people it's like 4 people per 100,000 killed with a gun and like 54 per 100,000 killed by reasons other than gun homicide (driven by drugs, alcohol, etc...personal rage).
Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom.
It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.

I don't remember if it was on an NRA fact card or if I read it straight from the source, but you're 7 times more likely to die from slipping and falling in your bathtub than by getting shot. Tubs should be outlawed for the greater good before one more person dies.  ::)  I hate to see an innocent child die but we all know the gun wasn't to blame. Neither was the vodka. It was the parents.

As a sport, shooting is safer than badminton. That kind statistic doesn't make headlines. What does? You all know by now... if it bleeds, it leads. That's the way the ghouls want it. Tragedy shoved in your face constantly because it sells newspapers. When's the last time you saw a news headline that was good news? Actual news, something other than your favorite team winning a sport?
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. Two thoughts:

Ever notice that when there is one of these "I was just cleaning it, and it went off" shootings, that the victim is, almost invariably, shot in the head?

Has anybody ever seen a "double action" handgun with a "hair trigger?"  I want one!

Mark Twain made a comment once that a person who could not hit a Cathedral with a Gatling gun would hit GrandMa in the head every time with an "unloaded" gun.  (It was during a speech at Harvard I think, it's included in many compilations of MT quotes.)
