Dudes! Am I hearing you guys bagging on TAB because he was Coast Guard? Didn't we just have a thread talking about how great the guard was?
Maybe you're just joshing him...I've spent most of my life near a CG base, and they go out in the MOST horrible crap you can imagine to rescue dumbass sportsmen who don't know when to come in out of the storm.

I've seen them protect a whole town after a Nor'easter...look what they did in New Orleans when the Feds couldn't get out of their own way enough to get bottled water down there.

Just can't sit here and see that without commenting. They may not storm hills or drop into enemy territory on a regular basis, but the Coast Guard does work that takes some big brass ones.

Two good points.

Rant on.

As for the CG...they have some great guys who put it all on the line to help...but they do have their desk flying bureaucrats advancing by using the CG as the EPA's environmental wing to hang oil companies and generate $$$$'s.  Fatcat fishing boats and yacht's changing their oil, mixing it with Dawn soap and pumping it overboard everywhere and if they spot the motor oil floating up by a platform they nail the oil company...which of course did not get a sample to prove it was a refined product...some poor working guy loses his job and the CG gets a political atta boy.

Off rant.
Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom.
It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.

Not  ragging TAB for being in the CG, The war those guy's fight  (against the sea and all it can do) NEVER ends. I'm ragging on TAB for being a junior officer (they don't put Admirals in charge of Zodiacs ). There is a reason that the Services put junior officers with Senior NCO's and it isn't to remind the NCO where he left his coffee cup ;D
Junior officers who are going to be any good will listen to the voice of experience.  This is TAB we are discussing, what do YOU think ?

The best training is experance, no doubt about that.

I took a medical discharge to avoid riding a desk...

For all of you people that say the USCG is a envormental ,gov...   Law enforcement is a a big part of the USCG dutys, They didn't pass the laws... thank washington for that.    Most people that are discharging things they should not be, know they are doing it and know( as it there has to be a plate in the engine compartment telling them its illegal) it is illegal.

The reason I asked about TAB's background is that his statements about machine gun owership echoes what I have heard from those who are a part of or have been a part of those communities. I am NOT saying that ALL military/LE shares his views. I'm saying it has been my experience that is where I have encountered the most resistance to legal machine gun ownership.

Based upon the type of posts he's made, I've noticed most are designed to yank our chains more than anything. It's kind of like someone has to take the other view point, so it might as well be him. At the worst, I think he is posing as a 2A supporter, but is in fact, a "plant" by the anti-2A orgs to agitate on our site. At the most benign, I think he is just a GRSINO- Gun Rights Supporter In Name Only.

I think he does contribute valuable material to our site though. How? He keeps us thinking about our positions and that only makes us sharper. It's kind of like how a knife is sharpened.....

TAB's last post brings to mind an interesting historical note. The modern Coast Guard was formed when the "Life Boat Service" was combined with the Treasury Dept.'s "Revenue Cutter Service", effectively putting life saving and law enforcement together in one service.

As to TAB himself,a little story, One time Davy Crockett took a vote among his Tenn. Volunteers that came out with only 1 no vote, when he asked that guy why he voted no the answer was " In popular Govt. no vote should ever be unanimous" , but he can still be darned annoying.

I've done both.

I never liked aresting people or writing tickets.  only one time we had to fish some one out of the water... most calls were got for help were for things like running out of gas or broken down ( those were only in emergencys, or in the shiping lane)  I also enjoyed the  complementry safety checks that were offered as community service.  I am and always will be a life long boater, lots of great people, limited number of ass holes.
