I spent an entire Drill week end removing Tri angular hand guards and replacing them with round ones.
The retainer ring has always been round.

The end by the front sight can be different. If it is triangular already, you should be able to make round handguards work. If it has round handguards already, you can not fit triangular ones on.

You would need to take the front sight off to make the change.

The retainer ring in the rear does not matter.
