I am searching for competitive shooting classes, (USPSA).  I've shot a few "fun" matches at a local range, but nothing that was sanctioned.  I want to get in to the sport and I wanna do it right, with proper training so that I can be as competitive as possible.

I've searched the forums and google for suggestions in the Miami Florida area, but came up empty handed.  The few schools and/or ranges I found, are either catering to concealed weapon permit process, security, or self defence. And even with these, based upon the website and information they posted, I don't get a warm feeling of quality, professionalism or safety.

I would love to get some first hand recommendations for schools/classes in the Miami area. The Tampa area would also be ok.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried the web sites for the parent groups
http://www.idpa.com/

http://www.ipsc.org/

http://www.uspsa.org/

They should be able to direct you to action shooting groups in your area.

I've been to each of the sites, but I've not seen any advertisements or listings of firearm schools... I'll take another look.

Thanks!

These are a couple of good guys in your corner of the world.  I would be worth the time to contact them and see if they are coming to your area, if you would be interested in going to them, or if they have any suggestions in your area.

Welcome to the game!

And, Welcome to our little mess!

Fish -

Sorry about sending you to the intro thread when you've already been.

Many grandmaster shooters also give classes.  The key is finding which ones are around you and who you "click" with.  A trip to a major match will get you in touch with a lot of shooters that can steer you in the right direction.  It will also expose you to a lot of the guys that give classes.  And, as long as your going register and shoot!

That's a good suggestion. That gives me a good excuse to attend/watch the South Florida USPSA Section Match, Hanson Range, Punta Gorda, FL on Nov 14th.

I don't know of any competition schools in the Miami area, but you can check with Derek Janowicz at Millenium Custom Gun.  They are located in Lake Worth, Fla which isn't too far away.  Derek is a very good shooter and he's plugged in to the local USPSA shooting groups.  He should be able to point you in the right direction for lessons from a local GM.

If you willing to travel a little bit, there is the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, just south of Orlando.  Frank Garcia is a top USPSA shooter and a very talented instructor.  He also has Manny Bragg and Ted Puente as adjunct instructors.  Both are outstanding shooters.  This is really your best option for some high-end competition training.
