I've heard those milled receivers started out as 13 lb block...
Pretty close, if not exact. This is the kind of machine work you see disappearing from todays arms makers because of the sheer time and tooling costs involved. It's a lot of time, effort, and work to remove all of that metal. Steel machines no where near as easily, or fast as Aluminum. This is the reason you are seeing so much Aluminum today in guns as opposed to steel.
For me that is one of the real hidden beauties of the AK-47 Assault Rifle. Nowhere do you see ANY Aluminum, in either the stamped receiver guns or the milled models. Many stamped guns are beautifully manufactured, and extremely rugged as well. When you look at a AK-47 milled receiver you also have to realize you have to use very small cutters to get at much of the steel that has to be removed. This adds to the machining time, and subsequent cost.
The only current manufacturer of milled receiver AK-47 rifles that I know of is Lancaster Arms here in Goodyear, Arizona, and they start at $899.00.
