Any body know what the rules of the sea are? Like rules of the road are at a intersection (4way stop) vehicle on the right has the right of way. How is it on the sea. I took a boating course 20 something years ago, but I haven't spent much time on the water since and can't remember. On top of that the protesters were seeking out the whalers they weren't just crossing paths! Thought's anyone?

Thats the theory. The reality is that a frieghter always has the right of way because it will take them half a mile to stop and 5 minutes to "swerve". Its like semis and mopeds. Don't be in the way. Less true for a whaler, but its still a darn big boat and they don't have brakes. Problem with these guys is that like all extremists (insert your flavor here) they not only belive their own agit prop, but assume that the world is divided between "evildoers" and the majority who think the way they do. If they are martyred, it will rouse the slumbering masses to the cause. What they don't get is that the slumbering masses will look at them and say, "what a maroon". I don't like whalers, I like jackasses less.

In a prior career I worked as a merchant mariner and officer.  Mostly casino boats and tour boats off of Navy pier in the Republic of Chicago.  Did do a little tow work as well.

The Japanese boat should have yeilded the right of way by the rules of the road.  Size matters but, as a vessel motoring in the open waters you are obliged to allow vessels on your starboard side to cross.

Now, having said that, these ass hats also had an obligation to stop and reverse their couses prior to the collision.  It's garbage like this that costs sailors their career.  That Japanese Captian or Mate that was giving commands will undoubtedly get fired or demoted due to the near piracy of these eco-phornicators.
