I own a Smith and Wesson 686 .357 magnum. It is one of the early ones. I found out that Smith had a recall of sorts on this gun. Apparently using magnum loads could cause the cylinder to bind. Smith developed a modification for this. I called customer service they sent me a shipping label. I returned the gun and they repaired it no charge, and paid the shipping both ways. They put a bushing in the cylinder and replaced the hammer nose. I cna say they cylinder rotates truly now, before it had side play in it. It had this play as long as I can remember. The gun has had less than 3000 rounds through it in its entire life (early eighties manufacture)

I would recomend Smith and Wesson to anyone, we need to support our remaining American owned and operated manufacutring of all kinds as much as possible.

Just got my M&P back from repair. All I wanted done was for the sake of comfort not function. I asked them to make the gun work for me better by changing a simple slide stop. The retrofitted the gun, which was 1st gen 2006, to todays design. All for free with free shipping. Not to mention everytime I emailed them for a status they responded within hours to tell me what was going on with my gun. Grade A product and grade A service.

Always good to read another good report about customer service from an American Company. I own several S&W's and the only CS issue I had was the Walther PPK/S recall. They were switching between UPS, and FedEx for shipping, (seems UPS is not super gun shipping friendly, IMHO.) Either way, made a few calls and inquiries during the wait, always got a real person, with a real answer, and a friendly attitude.

The PPK's are at the Houlton, ME facility. but the CS is good throughout.

Thanks for the replies. I am working on the funds to get another Smith, I have it narrowed down to a 642, 629, MP,See the dilema ? I expect the reply would be get one of each! Not possible but I think the 629 with some good 240 JHP over some H110 would work well for hunting deer and personal protection, right now it is getting the nod.

I think you can never have enough Smith & Wessons. Mine are all revolvers and a M41.

I have never had a problem, but it is nice to know what kind of a company S&W is for customer service.

I have posted before on Ruger's great customer service as well. Both good American companies!

I requested a finger grip extension for my M&P compact... they just sent me a whole new mag with the extension on it.  And the guy ion the phone was super nice.

I have intentions of buying at least 2 more smiths in the near future maybe more.  Lokin at a 642, a full size M&P 40, and the Smith 1911.  Possibly even going M&P15 for an ar platform.

Called S&W again today first to acknowledge the incredible work their repair and CC division did on my M&P and secondly to order a replacement frame tool. Mine is starting to wear-out from use. Basically the area on the tool that protrudes to hold it in the grip is not in the best of shape mostly because of my own incorrect use. Not only are they rushing it to me they're doing it at no charge. I've owned guns from various other manufacturers that will ship small replacement parts to you but all of the others (in my experience) still like to charge for the shipping. So... hats off to S&W once again.

I stopped in Cabela's tonight. and I got to fondle a model 22 Classic series revolver (.45 ACP).  It's time to start saving.
