Ruger SR556 where to buy?

I have really began to like the SR556 and am seriously considering buying one. First and foremost anyone have an opinion on this and second, where can you get one.

Will the local gunshop here order one, or is it easier to try and buy off the net and have it shipped here. I have never purchased a firearm from the internet is it difficult what steps do you have to go through. I have been really lucky in the fact that every gun I have wanted to buy was actually at one of the 2 gun shops I shop I at. But I have not seen an SR556 at either one.

Can't say about the rifle, but ordering online is no problem. You need to find an FFl who will accept it, fill out the paperwork with them, pay your money and you're done.
Its the first step that can be tricky. Down here, of my three local dealers, only two will do transfers. One will not deal with inter-net only businesses, only brick and mortar stores, as they don't want to compete. Fair enough, but only if they are a few bucks higher, not 20%-25% higher as is often the case with these jokers. The other will, but not if its a gun they normaly stock. Bear in mind that when you order, you will pay- $25-$50 in shipping + $25-$50 in transfer fees. To balance that, if its out of state, you save sales tax. Make sure the numbers add up before ordering.

I bought a handgun thru a dealer friend (does not have a store) and all he did was look around for a distributor who had one and place the order.  I went to his house paid the $$$$, filled out the paper work and he did the background check and that was it.  Probable just as easy with a long gun.  Another option is at a gun show if there are any locally.

 If you have your local dealer order one he will most likely add his markup to the price.

If you have any pawnshops locally that you can trust, they often (at least here in ND) have FFLs as well as the gun shops. Our pawnshops charge $25 for an FFL transfer, 1/2 to 1/3 of what the gun shops charge!

Believe it or not, despite the BATFs best effort to drive all dealers out of business, there are still a number of small time dealers who are willing to handle the transfer for a reasonable fee.

Gun Broker has a database of them.   I found one who lives not far away and he has handled a couple for me.  (more used stuff than new, but just the same.)

You need to talk to a local dealer.  The shop I work at will gladly do special orders rather than have you go to the Internet.  The standard practice is to have the customer put at least 20% down for special orders.  If the gun is available they come in in a couple of weeks.  If the gun is not available then it could take a while to get the gun.  If the pricing and availability is about the same I would encourage you to buy local.

Davidson's will let you order the firearm online from them and then get quotes on that particular gun from dealers in your area. You pay a portion up front and then pay the rest to the dealer upon arrival. In some places the local dealers actually offer reasonable offers, other places not so much. They are currently out of stock on the SR556's though.

Ksail, just FYI I just got my latest "Blue Press" from Dillon and they have a very flattering artical on the SR556.  1/2 MOA accurate!

When I bought my first gun through GunBroker I used their "Find a FFL In Your Area" tool and found an independent FFL in my zip code that works out of his house.  This guy is great!  $20.00 transfer fees (the fifth one is free - how cool is that?), can get dealer's cost on some items from the manufacturer (sometimes there are better deals elsewhere but he got me a very good deal on a S&W 686p), and will even ship guns for cost.  There are still a few good guys out there.
