Quick thinking on driver's part...... and loud!

ROSEVILLE, Calif. -- A driver whose vehicle crashed into a water-filled canal on Sunday used a gun to blast out a window and escape to safety, police said.

Marcelino Navarro/KCRA
Authorities said a sport utility vehicle was northbound on Industrial Avenue when it left the road just north of Blue Oaks Boulevard and landed in the water at about 9 a.m.
The driver, seeking to save his own life, used a legally registered gun to shoot out a window as the SUV sank, a bystander said.
The driver was taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center for treatment. His name was not immediately available.
The SUV eventually became submerged in the water.
Police were investigating the cause of the crash.

legally registered ::)

I have a centerpunch and seatbelt cutter within hand's reach in every vehicle.

Yes, I was wondering about that myself, it said the SUV "eventually sank", why didn't he just open the door or window ?

That's fine if you can before it sinks but if the water has already shorted out the electical system, the power windows won't work.  My truck has crank windows but not the car.  Once a car is deep enough to have water pressure against the door, you need to equalize the pressure in order to open it, if you can't open the window, you'll have to break it somehow.

And waste an opportunity to shoot up a car, hell no!

when the water level is equal on the inside and outside of the door, you will be able to open th edoor with easy.  You can not let panic set in.  That is what gets people killed.  There are many, many accounts of people trying to get out of thier car while its sinking, but forget to take thier seat belt off.

They actually did the car in the water thing on Mythbusters.

Surprisingly, the electric windows worked for about 10 minutes after the car sank but were not strong enough to move the window against the pressure. Once the pressure equalized, the window worked. Of course by that time you could just open the door.

I don't think they shot the window though.  ;)

And until the pressure equalizes enough to open the door, there will be air in the car...maybe not where you can get to it...
