Royal Gun Works Shotgun
« on: February 26, 2010, 03:45:44 PM »
Can anyone help? I'm trying to get information on a Royal Gun Works Shotgun.  It is a 12ga. Double barrel with exposed hammers.  The only matching numbers that I can see on 3 parts..under barrels, front stock and on frame are 98xx (ser. #, I think). This has been in my family for 4 generations now.  I know it is blackpowder and made sometime in the 1890's, but that is all I know.  Any ideas on when it was made and what it is worth for insurance purposes.
Thanks for any help,

All I know about them is that they are made in Belgium

best way to know the value for firearms is to use the blue book

they have an online version

I had a quick look and it was not on there :(

I did find this though

and another one ( more recent ) said around $500 USD

Royal Gun Works, it was manufactured by Henri Pieper approximately 1894. Values for this shotgun, in average condition (60%) run around $500. Laminated steel barrels were made to fire blackpowder shells ONLY! Clean it up and hang it on the wall. I hope this answers your questions and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage

I also remember that my great grandfather had it prior to moving from KY to TX in 1895.
Thank you for the links.

Really like to see a picture.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

I'll try to get some pictures.
If it wasnt for it being black powder only, I'd use during the next dove season.
It locks up very tight, better than my Meridian.

I had  litte scare with one. It wasn't a Royal, but another Belgian double hammer. I actually used it for a few dove hunts. I then realized that its cool factor was outweighed by the PITA factor and decided to part company when I needed a new flyrod. Off I go to my local (and much lamented shop) Dewings Rods and Guns, which specialized in fine fly rods and double guns. The owner looks through the barrel and has a mild coronary when I tell him I'd been shooting low brass through it.It seems not all Damascus barrels have visible wire (which I checked for). This one was internal damascus or some such and I had been playing Russian Roulette. He said he would sell it for $150 and offered me $75 cash or $100 in credit for a rod. The really funny thing was a guy was in the store with another wall hanger. He got the same deal. We both walked in thinking "free rod". Me, I took the cash. Him, he was on the phone explaing to his wife what great deal he'd gotten by selling the gun and getting a used sage for ONLY $400. "Isn't that a great deal"? ;D
