Sig 250 questions
« on: January 07, 2008, 08:42:18 PM »
Hello:

I have some questions about the 250 that Sig has come out with. I have not had a chance to get one in hand
to examine. None of the gun shops around here have them. Before I ask for a special order, what do think
of the 250? I have seen the video with Michael and the pistol looks good. Great design, but I am unsure about
ordering one and dropping money on a handgun I dont like.

Any  opinions would be helpful?

Thanks
Don

Don, check out post elseware.  They all seem positive.  I checked out a big framed 250C.  Felt good even with my small hands but will wait to see a small and med. grip.  Trigger is DOA and better than everything out there except worked over match guns (and better than some of them).  Sights are OK.  Good price for Sig Quality.

The one thing I'd like to see is a store display of the different grip configurations so that we could compare on the spot.  It would be cheaper than asking the dealers to stock up to 12 (I think) different model variations.

They are just getting out so I'd wait (am waiting) because I am retired and don't want to waste$$$ either.

i liked the P250 a lot...it reminded me of my P225/P6, which to me was a high water mark for Sig Sauer carry guns. Sig Prez Ron Cohen, in my last visit to Sig at the end of the year, told me that the P250 would be the platform on which Sig builds for the next decade. The super ergonomics makes the 250 point great and shoot light, even for a 9mm. The DAO trigger pull is, to me, on par with Para's LDA system which is my standard of comparison (I have shot a Para P18 LDA 9mm in practical competition, so I have the most experience in that platform). The price point is reasonable for Sigs.

There's an intrinsic contradiction in interchangeable-parts guns, though...what a gun company wants is for you to buy more guns from them, so they offer a variety of flavors...think Kimber...1911 lollipops in every conceivable caliber, configuration and state of dress. But if you want more, you've got to buy another lollipop, not just the stick. Ron Cohen, who came from Kimber, is the acknowledged master of the multi-flavored lollipop; look at how he built out Sig's 1911 line.

The P250 is an unlimited lollipop with a magic replaceable stick. Want a different flavor? Buy the lime stick and, voila!

The contradiction is that sticks are substantially less expensive than lollipops. Last year Lollipops Unlimited sold 100 lollipops; this year LU sells 20 lollipops and 80 magic sticks. Further, return customers only want more sticks...they've already got the lollipop part. So LU has to keep increasing the market for lollipops to offset the lost revenue on the sticks. Another thing LU can do is mark up the sticks, which have a much higher margin than complete lollipops, and encourage customers to "collect the whole set" of sticks.

I see the interchangeability factor as very important in LEO sales; less so with civilians. Yeah, I think being able to change calibers is just too kool — and the P250 is absolutely a technological tour-de-force! — but it remains to be seen whether such a system passes the "Michael's lifestyle" test; ie, if I got it, would I use it as intended?

I have zero interest in being able to change calibres with an auto unless it is a 22 conversion. What, pray tell, is the point?

Cost!  Until I hit the Lottery, that is.  For about $400 you get a conversion to a different cal.

Yes a complete caliber conversion may be $400 but a completely new P250 looks to be around $550.  Yes that is still $150 cheaper but that really isn't a lot of difference

I like it a lot; bought two (2) of 'em.

Way the rear sight, firing pin/safety, extractor fit together is different.

The internal frame is nifty. I would have added two (2) to four (4) parts though. The front and rear rails would have been modular units that pop in/out of the frame too (as they do on the FNP). If the rails break on the 250 (anything is possible; ask Glock about broken rails), you need a new gun. If the rails break on a FNP, you can replace them quick n easy for about $4-$8 dollars each.

BTW, my 250s are stamped "read manual before use". Both came w the wrong manuals (220/226/228/229 series, not the 250). Correct manuals are on the way from SIG.

Caliber conversion? I might go for it. Would be nice to get a new 40/357/45 I don't have to NICS. Unless Obama/Clinton change that too...

Am I correct that they are currently only available in 9mm?  Does anyone know when they might be available in 45acp?  I haven't seen or heard anything!
