Non-resident PA CCW
« on: March 31, 2010, 03:49:45 PM »
For those of you who live in PA I have a question. I have to submit two non-family references on my PA CCW application. But since I am applying for a non-resident permit and do not know anyone really in PA, what should I put? Can I use OH references? I can't reach anyone at the Allegehney office. Are there any PA residents here who would be willing to be used as a reference? I know that's asking a LOT.

I don't live in Pa, But I do have a Pa Non Resident CCW. I used references from my area. I don't think I knew that many people from Pa at the time I put in for the permit.

I don't think your references have to live in PA (then again, I don't have a non-resident permit), but you can use me.  PM me for the info.

I live in NJ and carry in PA with my FL ccw permit, which PA honors. Is there any advantage to having the PA non resident permit? They honor FL, but I would think that a non res PA might hold more creedence with LEO.

It couldn't hurt to have it, If I remember correctly it was less than $50 for the permit for 5 years

After browsing some of the PA handgun sites I found a few posts with recommendations to contact the Centre Co. Sheriff's office which I did. The lady there was actually helpful and more than willing to answer questions, which is a strong contrast from any OH sheriff's office. She said that the references can be local to me and all I have to do is mail it to them with $26 and I'll have my permit in about 10 days. I have to enclose a copy of my resident state CCW permit and thats about it. Awesome! The advantage for me is I take high school and middle schoolers to PA for various things as we are so close and I have on more than a few occasions carried in areas that are not safe but we had to go. So this will get me legal. I sometimes carry in DANGEROUS territory if I'm staying in the vehicle in PA now. But only if the risk is substantial and the need is justifiable. Unfortunately there are times that avoidance is not an option and the safety of these groups out ways the risk of the consequences of being caught without a PA permit.
Because of the nature of the work these kids go to do they become easy prey for predatory criminals as they are usually divided into small groups with resources to do community services with minimal adult assistance. I've been pushing for our leadership to change our policy but that request falls on deaf ears all too often. So I will do what I must to level the playing field. Plus a PA permit is recognized in my home states of Colorado and Texas where my Ohio permit is not. But, I think I read somewhere where Colorado legi-slaughters changed CO law to no longer recognize any non-resident CCW permits. Piss on Boulder!
