From recollection, and this was about 40 years ago mind you.....we probably missed the neck and the whole right side, only one edible shoulder as Ron's shot went through the left shoulder and exited at an acute angle in the chest but missed the vitals.  He must have been shooting at an extreme rear quartering angle and downhill.  The buck came over the hill on three legs when Chuck and I opened fire.  I was quite suprised we hit him that many times and now that I've thought about it, I think my brother might have put one in him as well.  He's the one that flushed him out of the cedar swamp he'd bedded down in the night before.

Burger, good backstraps, neck roast and half a useable hide...'nuf for a pair of gloves or two...and of course, the heart and liver where in good shape!

I think the darn thing finally died from the weight of all the extra lead we pumped into it...  that and the round that Chuck put between his eyes for good measure.  Broke the skull and ruined the rack mount!

Dad and my Uncle Mike were NOT happy with us...

I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

My dads custom Springfield O3A3, 30/06 of course, 180grn core locks. 4x Gibsons scope, He won it on a football pot, young 4 pointer at 75 yards, I had never shot his rifle before, and the trigger was 10x lighter than I was used to, so I got a very surprised trigger break, no time to flinch, shot was spot on. He was not there when I came out of recoil and I thought I had missed. It ran 20 yards out of my field of view. Thing was, I was recovering from a broken Femur, and at the last minute ( probably should thank Mom for this ) He asked me if I wanted to go, I thought I would just hang around camp and just be outdoors, but he gave me his rifle and said if I could get to his stand on crutches, then I could hunt. Crutches are fun in East Texas soil, especially since his stand was on a pond dam.

I will Never forget it  ;)

1st non auto killed deer(a large doe) was with my S&W Model 29, 6inch barrel, with a 2X scope at about 50 yards, it was DRT with 1 shot, a 180 grain Federal JHP at about 1800 FPS, was real good eating.

Sako Finnbear in 30-06. I still have the rifle, but don't shoot it very much anymore. I inherited it from my grandfather and I intend on passing it on to one of my grandsons.

8 MM Mauser in 1963. I was 10 yrs old and it was my very first centerfire rifle. I shot a small Maine whitetail buck. I didn't hit where I was aiming, but it dropped in its tracks.

My father had the pair of rifles made for us by an old Maine gunsmith by the name of Chick Haw, the top one with the shorter LOP was mine and the bottom was his. I still have both of them and will probably be buried with them  ;).

I'll never forget what he said next......you shot it, you gut it!

Fond memories!

Fond memories!

Great memories and beautiful rifles.

Why not try to find a father and son who aren't able to have such a memorable pair of rifles and pass them on...

The memories are all you will need..and you can add the joy you have given the father and son to your treasure.

—Patrick Henry

I wasn't serious about being buried with them. I have 2 sons that will each get one.
