Fox_Hound that is a great idea, maybe a remington 1100, because she can change the barrels quick. Use slug barrel for home defense.

Alternatively (if price is an object) you can buy a new Maverick with a two barrel set (28" for clays and 18" for HD)  for about four bills or less. Used 870s and Mossys are also cheap, and spare barrels even cheaper online. As much as I like guns (YES!  the Quaker scores a legit Steve Lee reference ), a 12 gauge with three barrels, a 28" modified, an 18' cylinder and a 24" rifled slug, is the only gun you'll ever need for anything other than CCW. But where's the fun in that?

I think you probably have a situation where some kids in the neighborhood did a little smash and grab.

I think education and awareness are the two best things for you to pursue here.Use this as a chance to talk to them about how dangerous the real world is, and that they need to be more aware and vigilant.

Start preaching the basics:
Lock the doors, dont leave valuables in sight, dont open the door to strangers, dont leave the garage door opener in sight, parking lot safety, etc. etc.....

Maybe she could sit with mom and a gunvault catalog to help bring her around on gun safety. Then get her and her mom out to the range with a mid-sized revolver. They're easier for someone that is smaller in stature to operate then a shotgun and there is no malfunction drills to learn, other than pull the trigger again - important in the dark. If you can get mom to the range, like most, she'll be sold.
