All I can say how they didn't kill or injure the shooter, I'll never know.
But boy were they UGLY.

Of course they were. They were toys of the nobility who never expected to have to use them. They got a pretty toy (by German standards, as in French whorehouse chic) and that was what they wanted. The only serious gunfights these guys got into involved battalions under their command. For serious fighting (eg duelling) they used swords. A lot less flash and a lot more well balanced Solingen steel for those. Oddly (not) it was America and India that made the pistol something real. It wasn't a fashion acessory or a toy for nobles to kill each other with. It was real. Simple, form follows function, cheap for the times, and good enough.
