John Kerry's New Yacht,...Moored In Rhode Island....Why?
« on: July 24, 2010, 10:56:40 AM »
To avoid Mass. state tax, that would be stiff on his 76 ft luxury blowboat.

http://bostonherald.com/track/inside_track/view.bg?articleid=1269698

Sen. John Kerry, who has repeatedly voted to raise taxes while in Congress, dodged a whopping six-figure state tax bill on his new multimillion-dollar yacht by mooring her in Newport, R.I.

Isabel - Kerry’s luxe, 76-foot New Zealand-built Friendship sloop with an Edwardian-style, glossy varnished teak interior, two VIP main cabins and a pilothouse fitted with a wet bar and cold wine storage - was designed by Rhode Island boat designer Ted Fontaine.

But instead of berthing the vessel in Nantucket, where the senator summers with the missus, Teresa Heinz, Isabel’s hailing port is listed as “Newport” on her stern.

Could the reason be that the Ocean State repealed its Boat Sales and Use Tax back in 1993, making the tiny state to the south a haven - like the Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Nassau - for tax-skirting luxury yacht owners?

Cash-strapped Massachusetts still collects a 6.25 percent sales tax and an annual excise tax on yachts. Sources say Isabel sold for something in the neighborhood of $7 million, meaning Kerry saved approximately $437,500 in sales tax and an annual excise tax of about $70,000.

“The boat was designed by and purchased from a company in Rhode Island, and it’s based in Newport at the Newport Shipyard for long-term maintenance, upkeep and charter purposes, not tax reasons,” Wade told the Track.

And state Department of Revenue spokesguy Bob Bliss confirmed the senator “is under no obligation to pay the commonwealth sales tax.”

Are you kidding me? Teresa Heinz Kerry, must be yanking the purse strings on this one, gotta keep Lurch in line. (Kerry served in Vietnam you know,.... >:().

What a hypocritical oaf.

Good for the goose? I know Delaware, RI, Cayman's, Virgin Islands, can be "tax shelters" for yachts, but what a punk.

Where's that whale that smashed the other sailboat at?

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

The irony of this is that in MA, you must "garage" your motor vehicle within the state in order to register it as it is in most states unless you have another residence in say, Florida.  Even then, if you spend a majority of your year in MA, that's where it must be registered.  We also have to register all watercraft like fishing boats, jet ski's and the like in order to use them on inland waterways.  Obviously that isn't the case with sea going craft.

Why do they allow this to happen?

f..k you Senator....

"Taxes for thee, but not for me!"

And you don't see the absolute wisdom in this?  The illustrious Mr. Kerry became a member of the ruling class after heroically serving his country in Vietnam.  It wouldn't do to have the heroic ruling class actually contribute filthy lucre to the state coffers.  It would just be unseemly.  That sort of thing should be left to we in the peasantry.

Sheesh, Eric.  Now get back to your hovel and send in some more taxes, Peasant!

Sarcastically submitted by Crusader who would welcome the opportunity to plant the toe of his size 12s in that hero's a$$crack.

Actually I saw news about this while I was in the hospital.
The reason given had to do with the company contracted for maintenance/ storage  being located in RI.
Even if it is a legit reason, Kerry is still a scum bag Gigalo.

Well, sure it was located in RI.  When you go looking for a place to store a boat in RI to avoid taxes, the one you pick for the job WILL be located in RI.

I would not know about that, when I want to store my boat, I just let the air out and fold it up  ;D
