Nothing wrong with stocking up, Col. Jeff Cooper's advice was always one to keep personal stocks high.

In today's world, and current Admin,  there is nothing wrong with that.

If the AR/AK panic has played out,...great...It is still a stroke of a pen, from creating another panic buy.

And never forget:

"I hear that small arms ammunition in South Africa has practically disappeared from the store shelves. Either people are wisely stocking up, or some arm of the government has decided to cut off the supply. In that regard, I advise you to keep your own stocks in good shape. Our enemies may not be able to abrogate the constitution just yet, but there are economic and political means by which they may dry up our ammunition supply."
Jeff Cooper

"I would add another reason - practice. Anyone who has ever been deeply involved in warfare knows that the only way to learn to fight is to fight. This may not be a popular view with the grass eaters, but I defy them to disprove it."
Jeff Cooper

Wish Col. Cooper were still with us, but he is in spirit, and his advice is not a bad thing.

Absolutely, in a full on SHTF scenario quality magazines and standard caliber ammo will be like currency. I would like to get an AK or 2 but then I need mags and ammo for them as well. I am pretty well stocked on AR's and what I need for them (5 complete rifles, another 6 or 7 lowers, a couple LRPK's, tons of assorted springs, pins etc. 100+ USGI contract mags, 50 or so assorted P-Mags and about 15k rds of 5.56) I've actually thinned out my pistol collection by a couple and used the money from that to make sure I had at least 8 mags for every pistol left (up to 25 for some) and 5k ea. of .45 and 9mm ammo. My next step is to get a couple .357's since I only have one at the moment. I like the versatility they offer.

After Katrina, when they declared it a "National emergency" they declared that no citizens were to have any kind of firearm at all.  Police and military went door to door searching homes for ANY firearms. Even completely non-functional ones were confiscated.  Check youtube for many, many video's.

Also consider that when TSHTF any person willing to buy / trade for ammo is also not going to think twice about killing you to take all you got.  And you just gave him the ammo to do it!  When people are hungry, desperate, and realize THEIR personal lives are in danger, a rabid wild dog is more predictable and safe to be around.

You KNOW your thinking.  "I'll make sure I'm smarter, and in a better controlling position than the other guy."...  If YOUR thinking it.  EVERYBODY else is to...   ANY encounter = "There will be blood."   :(

It's more a question of who's going to pull first.

Let's not forget the mercenaries from Blackwater.

These work good 2, I've got about 4 or 5 of them: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ZAA024-1.html

I agree. I've had one of these Ace Case mag bags for several years. It's held up well during many range trips, reloading practice drills, etc. My only modification was to ditch the plastic o-ring connecting the strap to the bag, replacing it will a metal carabiner. It's a lot stronger and allows me to snap the bag into a belt loop, thus keeping it from flopping around as I run, assume various shooting positions, etc.

While the bag has six cells, I only use three. Each holds two Bulgarian 5.56 mags without a problem. I don't know if they can hold a pair of slightly thicker 7.62 mags. The remaining three cells hold various gear I may need in an emergency - extra batteries for the dot sight, a small sheath knife, Israeli battle dressing, etc.
