Coming to New Orleans!
« on: October 06, 2010, 12:03:58 AM »
Any of you Katrina survivors out there, I'm heading south this weekend and looking for some clarification.

My Minnesota permit is good in LA, and I know that there are limits like no on sale joints, school zones and gov. offices.  I also know there are some weird blade issues.  Have been contemplating the options, but with only one wing yet I thinking long and hard with being downtown and only having my wits.

Any help with clarification from someone that lives there would be helpful!

If your permit is good in La. don't take a gun, TAKE TWO !
In the French Quarter stay between Bourbon St and the river, the next street over is where the bad part of town starts.
AVOID THE COPS ! They would rather beat you or shake you down than kill you. But they will.

Other side of the coin, Cafe Du Monde, It's along the river by the street car named Desire, order Beigenets and coffee.

Can't help with particulars. I can give you a bit of general advice (which may or may not be worth the paper its not printed on :-\). The advice is this. When in doubt, the odds of running into a cop are far greater than your odds of running into a mugger. The gun, though technically legal? It might end up costing you a night in the pokey (bring your soap on a rope), and thousands in legal fees. Here, I speak from experience. I DID carry  iin Chareleston, SC. Theoretically legal. I had (for the first time) to flash the gun. I didn't call the cops because I saw no scenario in which that would have ended well. My advice? Bring the gun. BUT! Carry it only if you think you will need it. Right or wrong, it might land your ass in jail. :P

If he's in NO, he may not need a gun, but he will sure as hell WANT one.

I didn't survive Katrina there, but I did grow up out side there, worked there on and off, lived there for time and picked up a degree there.  First, GO TO THE WWII MUSEUM   and see the movie.  Well, first bring a gun, then 2nd go to the museum.  In some ways it is not as bad as it used to be, in others more so.

If you want, PM me and I'll give you some info.  However, a significant number of cops will shake you down.  Especially the black cops, especially the white cops....remember that.  It's an equal opportunity town.  Residents who have had their home broken into know better than to let a cop make a pass through the home unattended since additional things may go missing that way...but that happens pretty much everywhere....insurance is going to pay, you know.

Know two couples from Tulsa area went there and one of the women was talking on her cell in the French Quarter.  Cop walked up, got rude and after a exchange back and forth he separated her from the others, threatened them and threatened her.  Seems the cop told them she stole that telephone...don't backtalk or you're going to jail...this boy over here (about 10) said you stole his phone....no I did not, etc.... he pulled out club and said you're going to jail don't get smart with me...but, if you can work it out with the boy I will let you go...cop walks off 20 or so feet...boy walks up...says gimme $50 bitch....$50 comes out interchange over.  Now, that's the fringe of the French Quarter where tourist frequent the heavily traveled parts don't get that and the mounted cops won't bother with that.

I can add a lot of other examples, but this encapsulates it.  Lots of NOPD have ended up in jail over the years up to and including killing parents and burying them under the house and ambushing their partners then coming back to the scene of the crime...two notable cases but there are many more including drug rings, stolen car rings, etc.  The stolen car ring has been busted at least twice I can remember...but still goes on...NO has a central place where the tow trucks bring them and then they are transported to chop shops if they want your car and no record of the tow will be found.  Remember if you are in Metairie or Kenner you are in Jefferson Parish not Orleans and it is better...that's where the airport is.  But, the airport is "New Orleans" property and they have some NOPD there.

The criminals...if they are young they might just kill you...oh yeah, if they are old they just might kill you too.  If you are visited upon and you can't defend yourself, don't be belligerent and don't make eye contact unless you are doing the pleading thing to stay safe by telling them they how great they are and that they are "the man" and you are a pipsqueak or such.  Do make eye contact before an exchange happens which will discourage you from being a target...just don't "stare them down" because that is an invitation.

If I were to defend myself there, and this is not advice to you or anyone else, I will .....if you want the rest  you'll have to PM me.  Since you are going to be in NO, if you happen to be there during voting, how about walking in and pulling the stick for the Repub for Lt. Gov.....

The DOJ currently has 3 unrelated murder investigations running against NOPD.

Dang!

I was thinking about the local critters, not the cops!

Having been there both before and after katrina, the only diffrence is...

it smelled better after.

If you can avoid it, its better off not to go there.

I would not go that far, but I would suggest Mardis Gras.

If true to their nature wouldn't they all just throw up white flags and surrender to him the second they hear he has a gun?

As far as New Orleans...  WHY, oh WHY did we spend money rebuilding that...  "Place"?!?  ??? ??? ???
Unfortunately I have been there (before God's wrath).  :(
