Just to PROPERLY set the stage, the hunter was alone, he set his camera on his shooting stick with the timer set.
He didn't know the cat was there until he got home and was looking at the pictures.

That flash might  have saved him from attack. 

I bet the cat thought things were going fine till it got blinded.
