The 2 newest members of the family
« on: December 20, 2010, 03:53:17 PM »
First up after all the good things I heard on both this board and other places I decided to finally try out a S&W 1911 when the opportunity presented itself. Being a purist I still have a problem when I look at that external extractor but I promise I'll give it a try. It came with a set of Crimson Trace grips (which I promptly sold) and although they're a really nice piece of equipment they just don't work for me. As a lefty when I take my normal grip my right thumb blocks or interferes with the laser so they do me know good. I replaced them with a set of VZ Operators in Dirty Olive. Those and a Wilson tactical ambi-safety and I'm good to go with this new addition. We'll be heading to the range tomorrow.

The other new addition also came to me wearing Crimson Trace's, (currently on ebay) they must sell a ton of lasers. I've been wanting another Glock 30 since I trimmed my Glock collection back to just to 21's and my first 17. I used to have a issued 30 at a past job and never really fell in love with the way it fit my hand. In the years since I've discovered grip reductions, stippling and all kinds of neat tricks to make a Glock fit your hand better. I decided this one needed to lose the finger grooves, get undercut pretty far up under the trigger guard and get a very aggressive stippling job. I've gone through a few different shops to find that Boresight Solutions in Miami does the best work for this kind of thing. Unfortunately this is not a well kept secret so turnaround time runs quite a bit longer than I wanted to wait for this since I plan to make it my new 1st choice carry gun. I also really didn't have the extra cash laying around with the holidays so I decided to give it a go myself. I've played around with it a bit to get the feel, I did a couple MOE grips before I decided to tackle a frame that would cost me a few hundred bucks to replace if i ruined it. I'll never claim that my work is or probably ever will be as neat and concise as what Ben at BS does but it will do for what I needed. I wanted an aggressively textured, functional carry gun with no finger grooves. I did the frame and 2 matching magazines and I'm happy with what I got for a 1st effort at it.

Range reports to follow, maybe as soon as tomorrow. Also back on the topic of the 1911 I know there have been countless discussions on here about single sided versus ambi-safeties. It's sort of a moot point for me since I'm a lefty and have used and trained with ambi's all my life, I can't change now. That being said if anyone has an ambi they want to swap for a nice single sided tactical safety in black I've got another one in my 1911 parts box.

As a lefty myself, I either adjusted, as the case for my Walther PPK/S, or bought an ambi pistol, or added one from Ed Brown, as  I did on my S&W 1911

It works for me, I adjust based on what I'm carrying. As you mentioned, for a fellow lefty, we train and just have gotten used to it.u

You will be very pleased with your S&W. Mine has some bells and whistles added, but really didn't need them, I was just single and had money than... ::)

Look forward to the range report. Good shooting..

Let us know how that 40 grit texture works on the "G" gun... ;D

Very nice guns, bafsu.

I've often wished I'd got the G30 instead of the G27......up until the "Great Ammo Shortage of '08-'09". The only ammo in abundance around here at the time was .40, so I was able to buy and shoot more often than if I'd had the .45............ (I still want a G30, though).

I got rid of my 27 about a year ago, I got sick of trying to find and keep ammo for it. I consolidated to all 9 & 45 (well accept for 357 & 380 that is but I don't shoot those much). It's not hard to find 40 now that I don't own one but I've decided it's much easier to load up on only 2 types of ammo. The bonus with the 30 is it fits in all the leather (but not kydex) I had for my 27 so I didn't have to buy a holster for it.

Different deals, same week. the 1911 was for my Sig 226 and the Glock 30 with the crimson trace's and a little cash for a mini-acog. Unfortunately I picked them up together so this was probably my 3rd or 4th multi-handgun purchase forms to get submitted to BATFE. From what I've been hearing I think I can expect a "friendly visit" from them in the near future to make sure I'm not supplying Mexican drug cartels. I had a friend who was visited a few weeks ago for a similar reason. It's kind of funny because he and I are in similar positions, we both are former FFL holders who were "talked into" giving up our licenses since it seemed we used them more for personally collecting rather than "truly attempting to earn a profit". They told my friend on his recent visit that if he is going to buy/sell/trade more than 10 guns in a year he should consider getting his FFL. I guess they can't decide how they want it.
