Help with neighborhood pest control please?
« on: May 12, 2011, 12:03:24 PM »
I and the neighbors have recently noticed the appearance of several stray "Unsavory Small Pests" in the area.  It's like somebody threw a giant bag of the #$@% things out one day!   >:(

Yesterday it'd been requested that I  take the initiative in getting rid of our new found problem.

I called animal control and they put out a trap in some bushes that caught one last night.  But at that rate...   ::)

Having past experience with a RWS P5 pistol at 100 yards I know it's accurate enough to do the job.  But I'm looking for about double that delivered energy.  At LOW noise levels.

Thoughts, experiences, opinions???

I know the RWS 34 is the "ultimate" (Everybody knows the Germans make good stuff!  ;) ).  But I've fired one, and "quite" isn't a word I'd use to describe them.  I need quite.  Under $300.  It's hard to breech that spending point on these stupid things.  >:(

I'm REALLY liking the looks of this.  :)

The Gammo Whisper is supposed to be nice and quiet. Its available in .22 at under your price point. I've never fired one, but talking to reps and reading reviews it seems solid. Its not as solid as the RWS 34 (which is my ultimate no frills varmint whackinator), but still solid. The thing about the whisper is that like all suppressed weapons it doesn't eliminate the noise so much as it disperses it. It sounds softer and you don't know where it came from. Behind the trigger it sounds loud. 25 yards and at a 45 degree angle from the muzzle, not so much. Try Airgundepot.com. They are a good outfit and had some reasonably priced refurbs. Call their CS line. The guys are knowledgeable and like talking airguns. They will give you good advice.

Try thi. Its out of stock, but pyramid air is generally within $20. The actual whisper is a few bucks more, around $230 vs $180. Damned if I can tell the difference. Both .22 at 950 FPS with a built in suppressor and an el cheapo airgun scope thrown in.

I have a friend who has the whisper and loves it, but even at 1000 fps, you will still drop 2' at 100 yards.

What kind of critter?

I think we all know the answer to that one operator. The less said, the better.

I guess I must be naive.  I could make a lot of guesses about what it is, but have no idea why any of them would be secret.  Animal Control doesn't trap Liberals, do they?  And I didn't think they came small enough for air guns?

Crossman is making one in .357 and the Sam Yangs will shoot .45 or .50  cal muzzel loading bullets. Plenty of gun for larger pests. ;) As far as Badger's problem? What I was trying to avoid saying was that you might bait them with Friskies and a bag of cat nip. But hey, I know nothing. 8)

As much as I love pets, feral cats or dogs can be a real problem and eliminating them is not a problem for me. If it were cats, a few cans of tuna in a location that is within easy air rifle distance would work, I killed a cat that was attacking my disabled cat with a blow gun, amazing how easy that 4" dart penetrated to the hilt.

Chipmunks are my problem.   Taken 8 in the last ten days out the back yard.  I opted for Weihrauch 77 in .22 with a Lothar Walther barrel and a 15x scope.  Then my space only goes out to 20 yds.

On the ranch, I had all sorts of critters coming by. My bad, I had a domicile set up in the dirt-floor garage for the barn cats, especially over the winter so they could stay warm-ish, have water and some food. During the summer, only water, as they were to - and did - keep the rodent problem in check. So the wild beasties discovered the offerings and started coming in droves.

When the feral cat - a cast-off no doubt a year or 2 earlier - started coming by and beating up all of my tpms, i had to do something. I wasn't real happy about whacking a trapped cat, but it had to be done. And then the raccoon family stopped in and just tore the place apart trying to get at the cat food in the covered plastic garbage can. Whacked 3 of them, again in the trap. And then the free skunk in the barn under my feed pallet. And then - no, we won't talk about that one, but he got one of my chickens, so off he went.

Doesn't count the foxes (yes, plural), coyotes, and other assorted critters that stopped by but left unhindered. Living in the country is fun!

Get the whisper. Mine works great and it quiet unless you use the Gamo pellets that they advertise as being super fast. They are but you can hear the crack when they go super sonic. Accuracy is minute of pest.
