It is hard to tell in the photo, but the hitch has a downward slope to it.  Even when the bike noses down under braking the hitch does not come above level keeping its approx. 30# hitch weight in place.  That bike, gear in trunk and bags and my fat ass in the saddle scales at 1,300#.  Sure, there are things that could go wrong, but the trailer adds very little extra risk to the standard riding risk.

The trailer has independent torsion axles, and it came with 4.80 x 8 tires.  I have up graded to 5.40 x 8, which involved raising the frame one inch higher to clear the fenders.  I have had the trailer grossed right at 400# during a practice run of 200 miles (loaded with bags of softner salt), and outside of taking care during slowing and stopping it is unnoticable back there.

I have a rigid tounge and standard ball hitch.  I looked at a swivel, but have heard of more bad than good with the change.
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.
