Some politicians who oppose the war - mostly Democrats, but a few Republicans - offer obligatory and oblique references to "the troops" and their bravery, while undermining their sacrifice and objectives by calling for their immediate withdrawal. That is not a policy, unless one regards surrender and retreat only to fight a bloodier war another day policy.

What is remarkable is that America continues to produce the kind of young men and women who are willing to lay down their lives for a principle: the principle of freedom - for others and for us.

Freedom isn't free.  It seems when things are at their very worst we are reminded of the very best of what America has to offer.  Life, liberty and the American way is not dead.  I think it just gets run over by the media promoting the liberal way.  America is brimming with people who know what is right and it shows up here and there.  You just have to look for it a bit more closely.  When the chips are down..the majority average citizens will do the right thing.  Even if it means giving one's life to ensure freedom is maintained, not only here at home but abroad.

I disagree, sadly. The "free gub'ment cheese" line looks a lot longer than the "will work for food" line to me. I have a habit of asking high school aged young people what they think about going into the military. Overwhelmingly they look at me like a crazy person and explain that there are careers to be built and money to be made. They have no time for payback, but boy, they sure support the troops. Also, I give you President Clinton, not once, not twice, and maybe 3 times!! THAT's where the majority resides.

If she gets elected, she will ride in the inaugural parade with Bill in their new Dodge Drafter.

Curries103 I'm sorry, but I also disagree and hope you are right and I am wrong.  The people I associate with (like most the people on this board) would do the right thing and heavens knows I believe I've raised my children to do the right thing, but most people aren't like us.  I see you are proudly retired USAF...and rightfully proud I would say.  I hope I am wrong, but is it possible that you may be closer to the people willing to sacrifice than the ones who aren't?  I have had the opportunity to manage and supervise hundreds of people working on offshore platforms and on land oil production operations and there is a large, mostly urban, element that wants the free cheese.  Not all urban...just the shiftless ones and they breed like crazy...we're being outnumbered and they are being joined by a mongrel hoard which crosses our border every day. 

Soon they will have the upper hand in most elections and really begin to squeeze us....tax by tax....with fervent disgust and anger that we are the reason they can't attain Nirvana.   I give it 6 or 7 years......

I agree with you and Mac up to a point, after that 6-7years ( i think around 4-5 years) The system will break down due to the leeches illegals and genuine unemployed taking out more than a shrinking tax base can maintain. At that point society will become unstable in the urban areas followed by warfare in the streets, call it social upheaval, epidemic of gang violence, crime wave, whatever, the rsult will be like N. O. after Katrina , but in 25 or 50 cities all at once. That will be the point when people like us will be able, if prepared, to take back our country because we are willing to kill for ideas like safety, liberty, rule by law, and we will work with any others who share our ideas regardless of race, religion, gender etc.. We will be fighting to reestablish LAW, not just to take what we can get. Some scientist once said that CHAOS is nuetral, meaning chaos is simply change, unguided change is usualy bad, but change can be channeled and directed to acheive good purposes.

I dug a pretty good size goldfish pond in my yard about 10 years ago as a present for Mother's Day. Put 4 or 5 goldfish in it. Did not feed them, as the pond was self supporting with insects and edible algae. Soon, there were 10 goldfish, then 30. I felt like I HAD to feed them, as there were a few that died, from hunger I thought. Holy Cow, I had 50 in no time and was feeding all the time. Looked great, but it was out of control.

We had a bad winter. The pond froze, like every year, and in Spring, there were only 10 left. I stopped feeding, and it "stabilized" at 4-6, and has been so for years now.

If we don't fix it with a coherent strategy, nature will.

Very good observation Tom, and I agree that there will be chaos, mostly economic leading to a serious degredation of urban life. The exact nature will depend how badly things go financially. But the socialists who run most of the big cities - Daley, Bloomberg, et all - cannot sustain their tax and spend ways forever.

Don't forget, however, we will have competition in change - the gummint will also be trying to force change. In this case, it will be draconian measures to limit freedoms and rights in the interest of "public safety", or maybe "for the children".

Like the bumper sticker says, Fight organized crime - the gummint hates competition!

Which is why I live outside the city....and I also liked the goldfish analogy, that was excellent.

Gotta have enough land to grow some food...don't forget the fruit trees if you only have a lot!

Everyone's observations regarding the coming upheavals of our way of life are not crazy right wing ramblings confined to the "Sky is falling" crowd. As I have previously whined about, I am literally sitting in the middle of a large public utilities project which required the relocation of my two-story barn. The general contractor for the job told me last week that I was his last relocation job. Because of demand, he is going FULL time into building "root cellars", with beds, ventillation, very heavy doors, storage areas, etc, for well established landowners in the central NC area. "You know, like Civil Defense used to do". Yea, root cellars.

Those who take reasonable measures to protect their life's investments will be the ones to survive the winter.

Kewl.  I'm selling my house this summer (I'm thinking) and am interested in any links, plans/etc. he or you may be able to share.   There are cellars here in Oklahoma, but they are geared to short term tornado events...I'm interested in something more robust.
