Preferred method for mounting Aimpoint sight on AR-15
« on: April 03, 2008, 08:50:08 AM »
I have an old pre ban Bushmaster AR-15, A1 style with carry handle. No rails. What is the preferred method for mounting an Aimpoint Sight? Should I mount it low on top of the hand guards so I can co-witness with the iron sights? Or should I mount it high on top of the carry handle. Pros and cons would be nice for all you experts out there.

Thanks for your input,

Jeff

If its comfortable for you, mount where eye relief and acquisition of target come naturally. On my Sig 556, I like a quick sight and target picture, but I have no carry handle. Have you considered removing the carry handle?

I did mount my optics with a "dab" of Blue Threadlock, NOT the red, a little goes a long way.

Experiment with bringing the rifle from the ready position to the fire position and see if you have to fidget with acquiring your target.

There are always options, try them all, keep us posted, and Good Shooting.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

Use a B-square scope mount and put it on the carrying handle

I have similar AR setup.. I am using a Leupold mount that screws into the A1 carry handle. It works well except for it does (as will all on top on the handle mounts) raise the sight picture up. In otherwords, your check probably won't touch the top of the stock anymore when looking threw the scope etc. Some people like this better and some don't.  But, having an aim point or something similar does work, b/c it's just put the dot or whatever straight on the target and shoot.  If my A1 style AR was a flat top, I would not mount it so high.. but.. it is what it is...  :-\

Thanks Hawkfish... did you have any trouble finding a good battle sight zero with your Aimpoint mounted on the carry handle?

Did you look into a pad for the stock to lift your point of contact, Like they did on M 1 Garands for snipers?
