A message from Vineland Municipal Utilities to their customers [h/t Stormlead]:

“On March 14, a Vineland [New Jersey] Municipal Utility meter reader was reading meters near the Winslow School and St. Isidore’s day care in Vineland.  The meter reader was using an automated electronic device to read water meters. This device is configured in such a way that it could possibly be mistaken for a firearm. Given recent events and concerns about violence in schools, the presence of the meter reader carrying the device was reported and emergency procedures were immediately implemented . . .


First of all, I would like to congratulate the responders for a job well done. I believe one can never be too safe under these circumstances. I also would like to apologize to those students, school administrators and parents who were upset by the incident.


To avoid a repeat in the future, we will take the following action.

• 1) VMU meter readers, in addition to their uniforms, will wear bright yellow vests with stenciling identifying them as VMU meter readers.

• 2) The device will be clearly marked in such a way that it could not be mistaken for a firearm.

HAHAHA! My daughter used to teach in that school district!!! The superintendent of the district had been bought out of his three previous jobs because he was such a tool but he seems to be connected....
Most people I know here in NJ have never even thought about what it would be like to HOLD a gun, much less ever seen one not on tv.
But then there are the others.... real people who laugh about it. They own guns and go through the mountainous bullshit paperwork to excercise their 2A rights to make sure that .gov knows people are willing to got the distance.
It's the land from hell...but you gotta be tough to own a gun here in joisey.
Ask me what I had to go through to change address on my FID card.
I got the blues as my companion.

For a change of address you need the same paperwork as the first day you walk in there except for the fingerprints... Big, long form with all your detailed ID, questions on "Have you ever.... are you under court order for.....domestic, mental, felony, member of an organization...blah blah blah". It also requires two references who must answer letters and forms from the PD inquiring as to your fitness to own a gun, etc. etc. Finish that and stick an $18 money order to it for NJ to do your background check. Then there's the mental health check permission form giving them permission to release any mental health records to the PD.  Then you wait for all that to happen.
I saved time by ordering 3 pistol purchase permits or I would have to wait that long AGAIN for them. They will piggyback them. Those are $2 each and I can only buy one handgun per month and the permits are only good for 90 days, but can be renewed for 90 more, but only once.

State police run a background check (NICS I guess) and collect all the money while local PD does all the legwork. Takes 3-5 weeks and I'll have a new paper card (with no photo) with my new address on it. But they know I'm tenacious....

Took me a moment to realize what you meant by FID Card. If I were you, I think I'd move somewhere, that when you mention FID card to a cop, they look at you and say; What the hell is that?
Children, pets, and slaves are taken care of. Free Men take care of themselves.
