A point of clarification... which always sticks in my craw...
The are heat FOLLOWING missiles - they DO NOT SEEK heat they just follow a designated source at launch... they just happen to be much much faster than the source.

In their little electronic boxes we assimilate as "brains" they have an IF:THAN statement.

IF it is at the heat source:NO - THAN continue to follow.
IF it is at the heat source:YES - THAN close a switch.... POOF

Point of clarification - It's "If, then" not "If, than."   ;)

When you are talking about a noun (thing, person, place or concept (Sidewinder)) being more, less, better, cooler, dumber, closer etc. in relation to another noun (target Aircraft), the word than is necessary.

When you want to give instructions in a step-by-step order, the word then is necessary.

There's no such thing as an if-than statement. You are describing the decision process (action/verb) of the missile alone, not its proximity or relational status to the target:

if locked on to IR source, then continue to follow until impact

if no impact after a set number of seconds, then self destruct

 :)

I might be able to build another one.  We'll see in a few hours.
