Since the "adapter" is classified as a "silencer", yes, it would be a BIG problem.

An early episode of "Burn Notice" showed Michael using an oil filter as an improvised suppressor.  Now, he was hand holding it in front of a 9mm pistol, with which I would think you would want to have a REALLY firm grip on the filter.  Bit I am glad to see that idea really works.

For just plinking.... a $70 adapter + $200 ATF stamp + a can of black paint, and you would still come out cheaper than a store-bought "can"........

Not really feasible for a handgun....... but on a rifle, with the right scope/ring combo, it would work.

I'm wondering how far they, (ATF), would pursue this if they caught you with the device, but not mounted to the gun? Does possession of the device in itself, without a filter attached to it, constitute a "suppressor", any more than owning a hacksaw and a shotgun together constitute owning a "sawed off shotgun"?

They were trying to screw people for having "Chore Boy" scrubbing pads because they could be used in suppressors.
They have put people in prison for possession of washers and O rings because they could be used to assemble suppressors.
And don't be to certain about the hacksaw and shot gun example, possession of both could be used to indicate intent.
Expecting less than the most oppressive possible interpretation from these fascist thugs is at best wishful thinking.

A plastic soda bottle taped to the barrel works very well.  For one shot anyways.    no I would not recomend trying it, big time illegal.  Besides you don't want to duct tape anything to your gun.

All this stuff is illegal. So are dry ice bombs, yet they're all over You Tube. And you can buy Tannerite at Cabela's. At least until someone blows up a movie theater or barber shop with it.
