Do speak some German (wife and Monster-In-Law are)... hard to listen to as the movie is in German and the over voice in Russian.

I don't know why I find Stalingrad so intriguing but I must have 10 different books on and about.
From the grand view to the theater level to the commander/platoon level view from both sides.
I just find it interesting I guess.

I think from the Russian POV, Stalingrad (St Petersburg) is kinda like our Old North Bridge here in Concord.  You have an invading army in your back yard and you'll do what it takes to protect the homeland.

I don't know much of the history but people, like a trapped animal, will do what they must to protect their lair...

There were KGB security troops shooting any one, including civilians, who tried to leave.
It was the beginning of Stalin's "Not one step back".
It was also where (mostly) men who a week earlier had been on farms and in factories were shipped (unarmed) across the lake, on landing, the fist guy was given a Mosin Nagant and the next 4 were each given a clip of ammo.
