It don't fit.
« on: November 27, 2012, 06:49:38 PM »
Ok here is the progression.
Had a SIG P229 - .40 - not so pretty good, but kept it because IT WAS A SIG.... then it got heavy.... daily wear had me walking in slightly right circles if I wasn't paying attention.

Sold it for a GLOCK 17 . Gen 2 - Mama Mia what a dream to shoot.... I was not a GLOCK fan boy before - but after the Gen 2 I am now... just not rabid and do realize not all guns fit or are right for all people.... but I loved that GLOCK 17 Gen 2... unfortunately it and the Gen 2 - 26 bot had to go when I was out of work to keep the lights on.... it happens, I was sorry to see them go.
I got over the hump and am missing them a little less.... *sniff*

Lovely wife bought me a S&W 642 with a CT laser grip and I'll cut both my arms off before I ever sell this gun - it fits... I shoot it well (well enough for a 2" barrel that is)

Finally got enough $$$ to purchase a new Plastic... er polymer "wonder 9" and here is where the story goes wonkie.
GLOCK Gen 2 and 4 have finger groves - my hands and fingers are large... when I grip a Gen 3 or 4 my fingers hit the tops of the grip  not the shallows for your fingers.
I could not find a Gen 2 (or 1) and at the time, I did not know about Robar and how he/they can remove the finger "lumps" to make a smooth grip.

I liked the Kahr 9's but I already have a 5 shooter... what was one more 9mm round... I wanted 10- 17 + rounds.
Do not like Springfield Armory (long story)
S&W - not a fan of the M&P line - did try the feel of them... but no thank you.

Settled (I I think that is the word. Settled) on a Ruger SR9c - nice gun. Shoots well - I could even see my self keeping it - except for that ONE THING that has cropped up... it don't fit.

I do like the external safety THAT to me is a plus - I don't care one way or the other about the mag disconnect - and the brass in the tube but no clue if the brass is loaded indicator ... we all need personal flags on our firearms....  I don't notice it at all while shooting - so what ever.

I'll try to paint the picture  Right had is strong hand - I grab the pistol and the "front strap and back strap" fit fine on my hand, the right side of the magazine well (if it was a 1911 the right grip panel area) does not contact my right palm - you could fit a #2 pencil between my palm and the pistol.

HOW I did not feel/notice that at the time of purchase.... I don't know. But I notice it NOW and the more I notice it the more prevalent it gets.
I need to be conscious of my grip and need to put my grip strength fore and aft - all most pull back with my fingers directly in to my palm -

The pistol rolls up and right - if I were to grip it like my old GLOCK - or grip it like a baseball (my usual grip)
So I am training my self to pull directly back with my fingers - I don't like this grip... if I'm ever under stress... you know damn well I'll go to what I know and grip it like a ball twisting it up and away from my intended sight line.

A suggestion from a gun store owner would be to add a  Hogue HAND ALL to it... but they do not look like they would fill in the palm area - and that's what I want, more width.

Maybe I just need to go out on the gun hunt again - but I'm open to suggestions about what I may do or add to fill the void, as It don't fit!

(Thanks for reading my book)

Talon grips?  Trim to fit the swell of your palm?

Get a Glock and grind off the finger swells if they don't fit your hand.

Yah Tom - that's all I can think about... but I really DO like the SR9c it just has that hole that needs filling in my plam..

Do the Talon grips add any width? Same question about the Hogue's? Is there anything that adds side to side width?
(NO! I will NOT wrap a sock around it with duct tape... No sir I will NOT!)

I've seen target pistols that had the grips altered to a custom fit by adding epoxy. But you'd never be able to sell it.

I had the same problem & ground off the finger grips on my G23 and put on a Houge Handall grip on it.
Now the finger grooves are where I want them.

The talon grips are essentially stickyback grip tape. By building it up in layers where you need it you gain the size you want. Not sure if this will work well for you or not. I would agree with others here and lean towards modifying the glock grip. I hate to make any permanent modifications to my defensive guns that can't be reversed but I don't know that I could trust multiple layers of the talons for a defensive situation either.

Hear you on the grip fit issue. I got a G17 Gen 1 as my first pistol and liked it but it just does not point naturally for me or my son. The SR9 does point naturally for us and since then I picked up a SR9c since it shares mags. (Seemed like a great excuse rationale to buy it at the time!)

I put a hogue grip on my G17 to try and get a better fit and it did help a lot but I still have to think about my grip to get good results. Not fun like shooting my 1911 or SR9. Your description of the feeling for the SR9c for you sounds like me and the G17 so I would say give the grip sleeve a shot as it is all of $10.

Have you tried the SR9 as it is more comparable in size to the G17? I find the full sized grip a little bit more hand filling than the compact grip on the SR9c. Also have you tried the full sized SR9 mag with the extension sleeve on the SR9c? I bought a couple to try and they work pretty well (except that my CA short mags are plastic at the bottom and the sleeve is a little loose on the plastic). I have found that the finger lip mag floor plate is the best fit for me on the smaller gun.

Personally I like modifying my guns to suit as long as it does not involve mutilation, so I say try stuff.

Hi Joe - thanks.
Yes I do use the 17 round also - to the same effect- still "bow legged" in the palm area on the SR9c.
I think I will try one or two of the grip sleeves to see if they take up any room

And I'll get me a replacement GLOCK 17 and 26 or maybe a 20 and 29... or maybe all damn 4 of them and start a harem.
Gen 1's or 2's though - thank you very much.

I used my moto tool and ground  down the humps on my G19. Just work a little at a time until you have a custom fit. It took me about ten minutes and the gun fits my hands perfect.
