It makes us wince/grin now, but we even had the French on our side back than, and they were a benefit to the effort for our countries liberty.

France has never been a friend of America .
Back then we were a useful way to strike at England .
Since then their only our friends when their Army is getting it's azz kicked , as in WWI and WWII, and Vietnam.
