RALEIGH, N.C. –  Officials say three people were wounded when gunfire erupted at a gun show at the North Carolina state fairgrounds.
It happened Saturday at the Dixie Gun and Knife Show, a quarterly event that usually draws thousands of people.
State agriculture department spokesman Brian Long says a 12-gauge shotgun discharged while its owner unzipped its case for a law enforcement officer to check it at a security entrance.
Two bystanders were hit by shotgun pellets and taken to a hospital. A retired deputy sheriff suffered a slight hand injury.
Long says the shotgun's owner, 36-year-old Gary Lynn Wilson of Wilmington, brought the weapon to the show to find a private buyer.
Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison says it's too early to know whether Wilson might be charged.
The show shut down early Saturday but will reopen Sunday.

When was the last time you went to a gun show where incoming weapons were not checked and zip tied ?
I've been going to gun shows in 3 states for 30 years and I have never seen it not happen .

The dumbass probably opened the case, reached in with his hand to remove the gun and put his finger on the trigger and pulled it out  thus firing it.

     I understand that an unloaded firearm is of no use,  BUT  damn, if I were to want to sell a weapon, I would clean it up prior to viewing/selling which means  that there would have been an inspection of the weapon and no way a round would end up in the weapon.

     The guy may have been in a hurry and decided to sell quickly and screwed up, but in this case it is too careless of a "normal" persons responsibilities. He should be charged with something.

We need EVERY gun owner involved and getting active in the fight, of course, but that involvement may come at a cost.  There are folks now going to gun shows and shooting ranges who may have never gone before.  Lack of experience, training, and adherence to the basic rules of gun safety lead to accidents like this.  We, as experienced gun owners and shooters, need to be even more willing than usual to help and tutor fellow shooters who seem to be unsure of the basics.  This is important not only for our own safety but also to cultivate a greater sense of camaraderie and safety in the shooting community.

How many other accidental injuries occurred this weekend?  How many were reported with the coverage this incident received?

Sure, gun control is a 'hot topic' politically right now, but that is just when unbiased reporting should be stressed.

Showing that accidental injuries from firearms is just a small percentage of the number of injuries from other causes would be unbiased, not trumpeting the firearms accident with headlines.
