My new Mongolian Horsebow
« on: March 24, 2013, 01:25:08 PM »
My new Bearpaw (German archery company) Mongolian Horsebow. State of the art in assault weapons 800 yrs ago. Actually made by Atilla-Arcus bows in Hungary. I've got lots of old and new longbows and recurves, but I've always wanted one of these. Classic bows I prefer the Asian style composite recurves to the European style wooden longbows. New stuff, I prefer the modern longbows to recurves. The other bows on the old Fred Bear bow rack are Gelco recurves from the 1950s.

There's only about $10K between that helmet and the rest of this costume, and that does not include the horse ...

The Parthian (parting) shot. The Parthians destroyed 7 Roman legions at the Battle of Carrhae in 53 BC. The Romans outnumbered them by about 4 to 1, but the Parthians had 1000 camels carrying nothing but arrows to resupply their 9,000 horse archers. The Parthians were a blocking force meant only to delay the Romans until their main army showed up, but the Romans made some bad moves, the Parthians some good moves, and shit happened. The Parthians captured 7 Roman eagles (legion standards) that were later swapped for a captured Parthian prince as part of a treaty w Augustus Caesar. Rome pretty much left 'em alone for about 150 years, until they made Parthia a client state under Trajan. The legions that did that had many more mercenary horse archers of their own for support; fight fire w fire.

I've REEEEEELY been thinking of getting in to archery - I have an acre of back yard and it aches for me to get a bow.
I want it for several reasons - one to simply just learn how to use one, the exercise won't hurt either.

I have been doing the how to choose your first bow reading on the interwebs lately and am almost ready to take the plunge.

Nice bow from what I know about them ....  congratz'

That is a sweet an elegant weapon from a by-gone era.....

I would quote Han Solo, but Darryl's red dot crossbow from The Walking Dead seems more cost effective.

I've got a crossbow w a red dot sight. The rate of fire is way slower.

In the time it takes me to nail one zombie in the head w that, recock and get off another shot, I could nail 3-5 with this Mongol bow.

OTOH, if you don't have the experience w bows I do, the crossbow is the better choice. The avg person is going to be able to make head shots w a crossbow way easier w way less practice.

Very nice bow (and attendant).   Thanks for the history lesson, too.

Will work for ammo

Most military archery forces had a very high rate of fire.
English long-bowmen, native Americans and Mongols could all have 1/2 a dozen arrows in the air at the same time.
Cross bows could never match that rate of fire and guns couldn't until Colt's revolvers became common.
