Edc pocket carry questions?
« on: May 15, 2013, 09:16:49 AM »
Since I am a new owner of a LCP, and never pocket carried till I owned said gun there was a lot of things I had to change and never thought about before. So I would really like some input on what you do so I can get some ideas on how to become 100% with this carry method.

So first and for most I want all to be aware that like learning how to drive Im not just jumping on the freeway and going for it. I have carried a few times (LCP only) but since I am better trained and prepared with my Glock 19 I am carrying that still regularly while learning the adjustments and becoming sure of my draw and presentation from pocket carry. I put a hundred rounds down range (25 of those the hornady self defense ammo I'm choosing to carry w/ no issue) this last weekend to get a better feel for the gun and been practicing drawing and reholstering as much as possible at home and am feeling much more comfortable to be able to carry the LCP solely without fear of inadequate preparedness.

Now on to my issues.
Carrying a pocket knife. I have always carried a pocket knife in my right pocket with the tip down. Over the years it has become reflex to the point when I don't have the knife there and I need to use one I instantly reach for. Now I carry the LCP in my right pocket. Having to move the knife to my left side. How do you all do this? Are keeping the knife on your right side on your belt? And/or how to you carry for easy of deployment in left pocket tip up down and what's te advantages to tip up weak hand. As I see that is what people prefer when it comes to weak hand deployment.

Next light source? If in cargo shorts at night no prob. But just wondering dont want to look like a cop with a bunch of crap on my belt drawing attention.

Also extra mag? Anyone carry one with pocket carry small guns. It to me sounds reasonable but I seeing many people don't, yet they do with a standard size gun which doesn't make sense but they list pocket carry as deep concealment last resort. I think any carry method as last resort so...really I have been just going no light with mag and knife left pocket. Phone goes really any where mostly in my hands cause I'm a texter my one real tactical problem in life. Lol.

Last do any of you pull the gun out of your pocket when you get in your car. Access to it is basically impossible if a threat arises. I have a great area between my seats that holds the holster firmly and hides the firearm from view yet is very easy to access in my car.

I may not be the most qualified to answer all your questions, but I'll address then the best I can. I don't often pocket carry outside the house or yard, and, when I do, it's a glock 26. I do generally carry lots of stuff in my pockets etc..

Pocket knives: I carry two daily. I transitioned from right side tip down to Endura tip up right and Delica tip up left. I only use the Delica. It took some getting use to, but, like your pistol draw, you learn it fairly quickly. When I pocket carry, I put the Endura in my back right pocket.

Illumination: I also carry two lights regularly. A surefire backup rides right pocket above the knife. A 6P pro rides in a holster on my left hip in front of my spare mag for a 19. When I have to be more presentable and tuck in my shirt, the mag and light often get left off. No gun I'm that situation, I leave the light in my right pocket. Pocket carry, it goes to the left.

I prefer to have a spare mag, but occasionally have to go without due to clothing requirements.

In the truck, I usually put my 19 in an accessible place (door or between the seat and console). Drawing from my pocket in that situation is almost impossible, but I prefer to keep a gun on me in case I need to bail out. I don't want to risk not having one on me in that situation.

I hope I helped a little. I plan to get an LCP when finances allow.

I too carry my pocket knife in my right pocket. That I won't change.
My strong hand is for grabbing the G27 IWB.

When I carry the LCP, I use my left/weak hand pocket and practice weak hand only for its use.
It serves the purpose of the "spare mag" for the G27.

My Keltec only leaves my pocket when I go to bed and put it on the nightstand .
Since I mostly wear cargo pants the knife hangs by the belt clip into  the lower pocket .
And I always, ALWAYS, have the Kel Tec .
I may carry something else as well, but if I am not in bed I have it on me.
Including if I'm walking around in my skivvies.  (it has an after market belt clip )

I've carried my LCP inside my right (strong side) rear pocket.  Knife as always in the front.  I prefer my point up for a folder so that as I put my thumb in my pocket I've already got the right grip.

Lately though I picked up a small IWB holster and have been using it for the LCP.

Saw an ankle holster that I like with safety strap over the top.  I'll probably pick that up in the next day or two and try it out.

Will work for ammo

5.11 makes some good lights with a clip, I generally put that in my opposite, you could put the knife right next to it OR you could put the knife in the back pocket.  When carrying a compact I've gone to wearing a 5.11 Covrt vest.  It doesn't scream tactical (unless you come across someone that has been in the Sandbox)

Another point I forgot earlier is that in a sketchy situation if you put your hand on your pistol you telegraph that you are armed and possibly make things worse, but how aggressive can you look if you put your hands in your pockets ?
No one needs to know that one of those hands is wrapped around a pistol.

I carry my LCP in my right front pocket in a De Santis Nemesis.  An extra mag rides on my belt in a nylon knife sheath just behind my cell phone case.  I carry two lights.  One clipped to my left front pocket and a smaller one in the pocket.  My knife has been moved to my right back pocket.  It is auto assisted opening and carried tip down.  In the car or on the street the LCP stays in my pocket unless I have that feeling!  When in public I sometimes have my hand in my pocket and the LCP partially out of the holster or totally out in my jacket pocket.  When reholstering the holster comes out of the pocket, the LCP goes in and the holster is put back in the pocket, all while being very muzzle and trigger conscience!

PS:  It gets examined for debris and pocket lint on a very regular basis!

+ 10

Especially around the hammer, I don't have much trouble with the rest of the gun as it's in a holster that covers all but the grip, but the rear sight and hammer areas are amazing for lint build up .

Wow. Some good stuff here. Thank you. I find I learn more hearing about how others do it and then modify or steal their ideas as they fit. It's always better than trying to figure things out alone.
