But its also .540" shoter.  I don't have a reloading manuel infront of me, but I don't think the neck would even touch.  I will go dig it out, but i am pretty sure it wouldn't.

Ahh..I see...so the bullet itself would "seat" in the neck area of the chamber.

Since it happened, that pretty much says the rest of the dimensions were close enough.

"Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters."

The .270 case is 3.34" long.  Same as the .30-06 so the .308 has room...

Buy one of these. They work, and you use your press to extract the case while the die is screwed in it. For what a gunsmith will charge you, you can purchase a new sizing die.

Bill, the case is stuck in the rifle,Not a sizing die

Search Brownell's  and Midway for "Broken case extractor".
I know you will find them for military calibers (.223, 308, .50) should be available for civilian calibers.

They work pretty well. I've never used them myself, but I've seen them used many times. Usually during matches with a lot of shooters on the line. Most of the time it seemed the more of the back of the shell that was ripped off, or separated, the easier they worked. If the entire back of the case separated, that was the best scenario because it released all of the tension. The broken shell extractor then had an easier job to do.
