DIY Kryptek camo
« on: February 27, 2014, 09:39:26 AM »
A few weeks ago I posted a thread about my adventures with duracoat and my attempts to replicate kryptek style camo . My friend and business partner over at Montactical prepared a Youtube tutorial on how its done.

Both of our shops have been working for about a month to replicate this camo pattern with duracoat. The problem with kryptek is that it is computer generated with sharp and blurry gradients on top of each other. Re-creating this with an airbrush was definitely challenging. Doing so requires the use of stencils and fee hand airbrush techniques.

I hope you enjoy the video. Forgive the cheesy editing, he got a little carried away.
Both of our shops are now selling the stencils seen in the video.

I have an HK91 that is a bit of an ugly duck that could use some lipstick....

I think Ceracoat is just south of me and there are a few distributors within a reasonable drive.  How difficult is this for someone with a little experience painting (industrial touch-up)?  May be one more tool in my arsenal when I open up shop.  8)

Thanks for posting SKS!

Ceracoat is by far the Cadillac of coatings but is also a very involved process to apply. Duracoat is very tough and much more user friendly and why I use it. The key to applying any good finish, no matter what it is, is patience. If you half ass it somewhere along the way, your finish pays the price. As long as your prep work is solid, you shouldn't have a problem. I really like how Duracoat is applied by airbrush. It gives you a lot of control over how the design turns out. With minimal painting experience you should be reasonably successful.
