I like the idea of the talking points to a certain extent. I would not like to come across like the "talking heads" mentioned of either ilk. As for the first question and answer you posed: "Why do you own guns?" The best answer is actually another question. It will allow you to isolate what the questioners objection is to the ownership of guns. While the answer you gave is great, it was given from a defesive postion. Answering a question with a question, when done without malice will put you on offense. The COTUS is clear (despite the leftist attempts to the contrary) my right cannot be infringed. What do you (the questioner) propose is the reason that my God given right must be infringed? When in an question and answer type debate you must be aware of the premise of the question. Most leftist questions are started with a faulty premise. (i.e. The "Have you stopped beating you wife?" example: To answer the question would be to admit that you have beaten your wife.) If the premise is faulty attack the premise and do not answer the question.
When people ask me why I own guns, my response is usually "Why don't
you own guns?", which usually ends the conversation because of their own lack of a valid reason. It confuses most people to have the tables turned when they were probably trying to draw you into a trap in the first place. If they do have a response, then I follow up with information akin to what was in the first post by 1776Rebel.

"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo
For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison
