I'm going to Africa for the first time on a hunting trip a next month (those Shooting Gallery episodes really hit a nerve!)  As you can imagine, traveling overseas requires some due diligence to remain legal.  Unfortunately, I just found out the US government changed the rules just this week if you plan on taking a gun on a flight outside the US and thought you all might want to know about the latest assault on gun rights.  Check out the new rules:

http://www.ice.gov/cpi/faq

This is very bad on many levels.  First you must "register" your firearms on a federal website (backdoor firearms registry maybe?).  But this is the best part, the site that ICE directs you to is only useable by commercial exporters so the only way to comply with the law is to pay an exporter to register your firearm for you!  There are other new restrictions on types of firearms you can take out of the country such as less than .50 caliber and no semi-autos.  To make matters worse they just announced all of it this week and this all goes into effect April 3rd from what I heard.  It was funny when I called my local Customs Office, then ones that are supposed to enforce this crap, and they had only a vague idea of this new regulation and really didn't have a clue.

I get the feeling we will be seeing lots of things like this, the green tipped 5.56 bans, etc. over the next two years.

I really want to go, too, but don't have the money.   However, if I do ever go to Africa, I will go as part of an organized safari, originating in the US.   I will depend on them for all the outfitting and to get my firearms over and back.

How are you making your plans?    Is there no one to help you navigate all of these regs?

Will work for ammo

This site has been a big help: http://www.africahunting.com

I was all set with everything until this latest reg change came up.  Everyone is struggling with the latest edict but may have found a place that help.  Just more money to spend.  >:(
