GADPA - the new shooting discipline
« on: May 16, 2015, 04:24:11 PM »
Great Atlanta Defensive Pistol Association:

In the metro Atlanta area, for the past 10 years one of the IDPA organizers has been GADPA.   Under their (our) umbrella there are about six or seven club level IDPA matches a week and one Tier II outdoor match a month.  All that changed last year after the GA State IDPA match.  GADPA decided to drop IDPA and go it's own route.  Two things that broke the camel's back.  Flat footed reloads and stage design.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:   GADPA.

The big differences are:

Target
Scoring
Ammo Management
Divisions

What seems to be the motivation is to create a competition that is more realistic  self-defense scenario, especially in the target , the scoring, and in ammo management.

TARGET:   Smaller "down zero" area with a spine area.  The head area has a much smaller "down zero".  (Sorry I don't have  a picture at this time, but will try to get one next week.  Check the rule book.)

SCORING:  This was tested on regular IDPA targets and once you understand it, it makes sense.   Basically there's no need for any definitive number of hits on a target.  If you fire one shot and it's in the "down zero" or the Head, then that's it.  All other shots are suflureous.  If however, your best shot is in the body "down one" area, you need two shots and are scored based on two.  If your best shot is in the "down two" then you better have 3 shots on the target.   See the rule book to get a better understanding.

AMMO MANAGEMENT:     If you want to drop rounds on the ground, that's okay.  (For safety you can't go back later during the stage and retrieve them.)  Just like in real life, if you run out, you're penalized.  If you want to retain a partial mag, that's fine too.   And since Georgia, isn't a 10 round limit state, that artificial limit is out.  No mandatory reloads and you reload whenever, wherever you want.

DIVISIONS:  Concealed Carry (IDPA-like).   Competitive (no concealment required).  Open (USPSA unlimited like equipment).  Revolver (up to 8 rounds).  Single Stack (1911). And Not For Competition (anything that's safe but doesn't qualify in the other divisions).

So there you have it.   I'll probably try it out in REV class Monday night, work permitting.

The GADPA Target

The slightly larger "down zero" circle in the body is used for major power factor, while the inner one is for minor power factor.    The numbers in parenthesis are the penalty points if this were a No-Shoot target.  For a complete discussion and pictures of scoring see the FAQ:  http://www.gadpa.com/Resources/Documents/GADPA%20Frequently%20Asked%20Questions.pdf
