New Long range exercise
« on: June 02, 2015, 12:17:17 AM »
Now that you've done your homework with your range estimating reticle, and know a mildot from a MOA, whenever you see a scope being used in a movie, pause it and use your knowledge and range the target. Fun, I watched a movie today that the spotter called 2250 meters, the shooters scope looked like 800 if it was on 10 power.

So I watched the new Pierce Brosnan movie last night  (Survivor), in it he is going to shoot the Times Square Ball (filled with explosive gas) on New Years,  his scope bracketed the ball with 7mils, the ball is 12' diameter. You use the size of the target in yardsx1,000÷mils=range to target.

12'=3.636yrdsx1,000=3,636÷7 (mils)=519.42yrds
The ball did look huge in the scope.

I know, first hand, that videos/movies/TV are all "staged" so I've never tried to analyze something like this.

I just accept the fact, guns have unlimited supply of ammo, scopes let you hit any target at any distance offhand without ever missing and silencers make all guns sound like cat farts.

I have read about that formula in the past.  I have meant to try it out when I get the rifles out, but always forget when I break out the toys.  Will try to remember to use it next time I go out to play.
If I appear taller than other men it is because I am standing on the shoulders of others.

Curious, but when did they change the number of feet in a yard.  Here all along I thought it was 3'.  Now it's 3.3' ?

That's some thing we need to be aware of. in talking we often act like Yards and Meters are interchangeable. But that is a 3.3 Ft. difference in range at just 100 yards which can be the difference between a hit and a clean miss.
