If a clip was wide enough to clear the side of a pistol it would be too loose to hold onto your pocket. I don't know how to make one that hangs on tight then folds out of the way. I don't think it could be done but it's an interesting idea.
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. How about this.

A button on the side/front/back of the magazine base plate.  When squeezed, it pivots a clip out of a recess or cutout in the body of the magazine?

When the magazine is pulled from wherever it is clipped, the clip springs back into the magazine body.

Need to be careful it doesn't interfere with the cartridges in the mag

Patent the idea now then perfect it.

Because it wouldn't fit in the pistol with a clip on the magazine.

If it swung out of the way or dropped all the way off it would not have to fit in the pistol.

Maybe just a snap on the bottom of the mag. Pull the mag out and the clip releases from the snap and drops away??

another  idea.

How about a hoop sized to fit snug around the mag butted against the base plate...with the clip that slips over the mag and it stays clipped to where it is placed...like a skeletal mag pouch..

might have to be a two part clip..like a clothespin to stay clamped to the pocket when the mag is removed

Yep. Also started thinking.... AGAIN... Why not a magnetic strip on the belt to hold the mag in place??? Just a simple rare earth magnet with a velcro loop to hold it on your belt where you want the mag to be??

I like that...no mechanical parts moving.

Two thoughts
1 magazine will have to be steel..or have enough steel for the magnet to hold it.

2 i don't know how strong that magnet is, but might it need help if you are jumping or brush against something to hold the magazine in place?

USPSA shooters use magnets to hold mags so they are strong enough to take a lot of movement and bumping and banging.

They sell those magnetic strips to hold mags on a wall and I know rare earth magnets are pretty strong. As far as getting knocked off maybe wear inside the waistband?? I have some of those magnets made to hold up to 25 pounds.  I may do some  Xpermenting''''' To be a good a good redneck maybe I should start with "hold my beer and watch this"!
